We stopped here for lunch for the first time on our return trip from Charleston to Lacaster Co. I was skeptical of the condition of the room that were very outdated. And the temperature was set very low even I had goose bumps. I was in the mood for steak which Google illustrated properly. I ordered the rib eye steak moderately priced with a baked potato. My wife ordered crab cakes that looked appetizing. The steak was delivered with a heart of fat and gristle in it. I ordered it medium but it came more rare than I liked. Hind sight told me it should have gone back at that point. As I tried to cut it, it was terribly stringy and tough. I was so hungry I encompassed the whole cut with my knife. Over 50% was inedible because of fat and gristle. I showed the waitress my issue and she said she would talk to the manager. Upon her return she asked me if I wanted a replacement. I replied no then she left again and came back and said she would take $5.00 off. When she brought the check she had taken $8.00 off and said when you come back I’ll take care of you. So it ended. Paid the check and on our way never to patronize again. This is not the place for beef, steaks or the like. Another customer questioned us about the issued and agreed it was NOT a steak house. Too bad for them. I was expecting a full refund but wasn’t their policy. Mine was to say goodbye. If I could post less than a star I would.

Atmosphere, dated. Our food was hot fresh well cooked, I had the 12oz ribeye, very tasty, cooked perfect medium rare, the sweet potato fries were so good, the steak sauce made in house, I used on my fries SO good. My wife had the steak salad, bountiful perfectly cooked steak. The waitresses earned a 22% tip. Around 33.00 per person with one adult beverage each. UPDATE 2/14/2024 Valentines Day, took my lovely wife, get mother and my sister to dinner. The food is still good but with 2 apps and 2 adult beverages, 4 people the tab including gratuity was 187.96 What caught my eye were the sharp price increased to include 11.00 for mozzarella stocks, 11.00 for crab dip served with packaged saltiness and 26.00 for 4 desserts that were 4 bites. The food is good and I understand the economy is not good but nearly 50.00 for 2 apps and 4 desserts was breathtaking. Quality of food and service was good but price especially for a family are becoming prohibitive for anything more than the occasional outing. And I do hate removing a star!

Anything that surprises me gets 4 to 5 stars. The outside of the building looks a little run-down and kind of an older neighborhood but the inside was very fresh and looks to have been renovated fairly recently. We were seated pretty quickly and the staff was very polite. I ordered the black and blue New York strip which comes with a blue cheese crumble as well as the tortilla soup. My wife ordered the chicken salad croissant. I also had the tortilla soup and fresh croissants with honey. Both were good. my steak was an average cut of meat. It was cooked well but a little bit grisly at the end. Overall not bad. The wife's chicken salad sandwich was very good but her onion rings were a little cold. Overall I would rate this a good experience and I would come back if I was in the area. The bathrooms were clean but not that fancy.

The service is extremely slow. After calling ahead to make a reservation to be able to make it back to work in time, we arrived around 12:05 and ordered our food along with our drinks as soon as the waitress came. After bringing our drinks we had absolutely no interaction with our waitress for over 30 minutes. its like she disappeared. At 12:50, I approached another waitress and asked that our food be placed in to-go boxes. 5 minutes later our food came out on plates. We had to get everything boxed up and paid for and were late getting back to work. I called after getting back to notify a manager of our experience. I was told I could not speak to one because of the lunch hour rush (mind you I didn't mention that the restaurant wasn't even that busy. Parking lot and restaurant not even close to half full). I accepted and called back 2 hours later. I was told the manager was not there. Finally I called back around 5 and spoke to a manager. To my dismay he was not only rude, but completely defended the lack of service by stating that everything is made from scratch and even had the audacity to ask if I had worked in the restaurant industry (implying I was ignorant to the amount of time it takes to prepare a salad (which is what I ordered)). He even called me rude for sharing my horrible experience with a coworker.

I do not intend to EVER go back to this establishment. I understand having slow service every once and a while or a day with bad service... things happen! BUT for the "manager" to respond in the manner that he did leads me to believe they support this sort of behavior, which is not something I am willing to support with my business.

If I could leave 0...

My message to Chestnut Grill:

Tonight, to celebrate Mother's Day, we (a party of eight) came to Chestnut Grill. After standing to wait for approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes (due to a supposed lack of silverware, despite the plethora of small parties being seated), we had to wait over an hour for our food. When some of it arrived, it was cold. Some of it didn't even arrive. The cold food was returned after being microwaved for a couple of minutes, resulting in hard food on a hot plate. About ten minutes later, the last plate arrived with teriyaki chicken and a spoonful of rice. When we talked to a manager, he said you were really busy, despite having half a dozen tables open and that he was very sorry as he shrugged. He did, however, offer to re-microwave our food for us, like a low-class fast-food restaurant with a low rating from DHEC. If this had been an isolated incident, I may have overlooked it. However, I have already been spat on, had food thrown at us, and given ridiculously pitiful service and contacted Chestnut Grill with no response. If I do not receive a satisfactory response in a reasonable amount of time, I will post this message as a review.

NOTE: After a week, they read the message. A week after they read it, they still had...
