If you are a fan of regular, Japanese-style sushi then head 2 mins down the street to Mikado Sushi; this is not the place for you.
First, it took about 15 minutes after being seated for our drink and appetizer orders to be taken. We dined at about 7pm and there were only 4-6 other parties. Tables that were seated after us received appetizers before we could even order ours. That being said, the Tuna Carpaccio and Blackberry Margarita (definitely did not skimp on the tequila!) were enjoyed by the table.
Next, the menu was confusing and riddled with grammatical errors that made it hard to understand what was on or in certain rolls. The consensus at the table was that the rolls were disappointing, lacking flavor, and confusing based on how they were presented on the menu. Sushi rolls arrived to the table 10 mins before appetizers. Shrimp Tempura roll topped with salmon and filled with cream cheese was confusing for all of us, Spicy Tuna made spicy by the mayo on top rather than seasoning on the tuna itself was not ideal given that the roll was ordered without mayo (can thank the menu grammar for this) and the Philadelphia roll was bland.
After explaining these issues to the manager in detail, she spoke with our waitress who then informed us that the manager did not really speak or understand English well enough to receive the complaint, so we were forced to explain these things again to our waitress. She then explained that this is actually "Brazilian style/inspired sushi", which was why cheese and sauces were featured so heavily in many of the rolls. Nowhere on their website do they explain this Brazilian inspiration, or purport to be anything beyond an "Asian gastronomical experience" (their words, not mine). It was unfortunate that it took an entire meal for us to realize that this restaurant did not provide an accurate representation of themselves online.
We were starving so we ate most of what turned out to be a lackluster meal but chose to be comped the not so Spicy Tuna. A member of our party was celebrating a birthday and was given a complimentary Birthday dessert, which was a nice gesture. The next stop after this disappointing meal was to Mikado up the street for the kind of sushi we're more used to.
Based on the reviews there is clearly an audience for this type of sushi, as they sport a 4.9/5 stars here on Google. Unfortunately, our party was just was not part of that audience. I'd suggest that they explain the experience one could expect from their restaurant on their website, rather than masquerading as a...
Read moreTo give some context, I typically don't write negative reviews. Even when we do have a bad experience, I tend to give places a break. However, this was just bad. We were the first table of the night, as the place was empty when we arrived. The service was terrible, initially we placed the AYCE order with soups, hot apps and sushi. We only received 2 of the apps, and when I reminded the server of the other items, it seemed that he didn't remember we placed the other apps and went back to the sushi bar area to ask for them. 10 mins later we received the apps with 2 of the 5 sushi rolls we ordered.about 25 mins passed by when I asked about the other rolls and the server seemed confused. I asked if they were coming and he asked which ones I was talking about, so we placed the order once more. An additional 20-30 mins passed by for us to receive another round of food. During our unoccupied time, no one touched the table to say sorry for the way or even acknowledge the mistake, I had to flag down the server to ask if the food was coming any time soon. I wasn't rude, I was polite, but pretty baffled that even after our food was forgotten about, they weren't in a rush to recover. When the second round of food did arrive we couldn't eat half of it, as the cucumbers in the rolls were spoiled. After we brought this to the attention to the server he simply said "ok" and we just ordered other 3 rolls. Lord help us, that was a mistake, as the next order took another 25 mins! We just ate some of it, even though some of the rice was crunchy and hard, we had to eat around it. Lastly we ordered an ice cream for my kid... When it arrived it was ice cream soup! I couldn't believe you can mess that up, but I guess it can happen. The cherry on top is that it's $40 a person! We have had better sushi from Publix. No apology, no discount, even after communicating all the shortcomings. I hate to say this, but don't waste your money, go to the other sushi down the road and eat $40 worth of sushi that will leave you with a satisfied feeling. Don't make the same...
Read moreI want to start by admitting that I am in no way knowledgeable in the ways of sushi, and I found that Musashi Sushi Lounge was a great place to discover sushi. Musashi does indeed offer all you can eat Sushi/Sashimi/Nigiri. Previously, I had never really liked any sushi I had tried, but because of Musashi, my views on sushi have changed. The seafood did not taste gamey, and the vegetable ingredients had the crunch of freshly prepared cucumbers, avocado, and more. The veteran sushi aficionados that were with me informed me that the sushi was indeed top tier. Despite, the high quality of their sushi, I found the dessert menu to be uninspiring. The desserts were delicious but lacked the creativity and care of the sushi menu. The service was attentative, especially our server Nicole, who ensured that our table was always full of food and our cups were never empty (my personal measure of an excellent server). Though Nicole was not alone. It appeared that Musashi utilized a brigade style approach to their wait staff, and multiple servers assisted our table. Nicole was able to provide knowledgeable advice for this sushi rookie and demonstrated the serene patience with our inexperienced that used to be the norm for Central Florida guest service. The atmosphere was night club style, a mix of a night out in Sao Paolo and Toyko, which was fiting to the Brazilian fusion with the traditional sushi. My poor grade for the atmosphere comes from the single fact that the restaurant was extremely hot. I know it seems like a small gripe, but I was sweating, and my clothes were still wet with sweat once I got home. It is the height of summer in Central Florida, but my expectation is that a place such as this offers not just great food and service but also a repreive from the oppressive heat. I assume that there was some kind of issue with their AC as that is common during this time of the year. Assuming that the AC returns, Musashi is one of the best places for sushi in Orlando, and the service will...
