I was in Oxford for a 3-day vacation. I wanted one nice seafood meal. Well, sad to have to say, Capsize was not the place.
The food my guest and I ordered was inedible; gross, in plain English. We ordered the crab stuffed portobello mushrooms, onion rings, smash burger with shoestring fries and hush puppies. The mushrooms were supposed to be topped with “lump crabmeat.” Instead, it was a soupy, stringy, mayonnaise-laden mess (think lumpy cream of wheat cereal before it cools) of gunk plopped on top of completely tasteless, water-logged mushrooms, held together with an inappropriate amount of melted, hardened cheddar cheese spread on top to laminate the mush to the mushroom. Unreal. My guest was sure we were in an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. On to the onion rings… 5 rings of grease sponges. We literally held them up and squeezed, the grease pouring onto the plate. Shoestring fries, same. Hush puppies were fine, somehow. Tasteless, yes, but not greasy.
In addition to the bad food, we waited for 35 minutes before waitstaff came over to take our order. We ordered water and an ice tea and that took 13 minutes to get to us. At that point we ordered our food. 40 minutes later, no food… we almost left. I so wish we had.
The positives were the place looks cool and calm and clean, and was very nice on the water. Also, while the manager didn’t come to our table, he did give the server the go ahead to let us off the hook for all of the items that were inedible…. So everything but the hush puppies. I did state that I wouldn’t be paying for those items, and I really don’t think he could have argued if he came to the table and saw the food. No doubt he knew as much, so skipped the formality. I do rather appreciate that. We’re two quiet older ladies who don’t like public conflict.
I will also say that we first tried to go to Doc’s Grille because it was a few minutes closer to us, but the lot was so crowded and the standing line was way out the door. We chose not to stay because of my guest’s knee issues that would make her very uncomfortable to stand for too long. Upon pulling up to Capsize and finding a parking spot immediately, we joked, “Uh oh, not a good sign if lot is half empty.” Joke on us I...
Read moreMy sister and I arrived about 4:30 in the afternoon to enjoy a glass of wine and some snacks and of course the view. The place was empty. The hostess cheerily asked, “two for dinner?” When we said probably just appetizers we were told that the tables were all booked with reservations and we would have to sit at the bar (with our backs to the view), which left us wondering why the tables weren’t booked before she knew we weren’t planning on a full fledged meal. We tried to make the best of it and took a seat at the bar but were greeted by the rudest bartender I’ve ever encountered. When my sister asked about the house wine she got immediate attitude because she didn’t ask specifically about the house wine of her color choice as the bartender openly rolled her eyes while snorting the question of red or white. My sister answered with “merlot” and was met with a very sarcastic “so that would be red” and rolled her eyes again as she walked away issuing no answer. She returned in a couple of minutes, looked at my sister and said “dark horse” and walked away without our drink order. We left. Sad thing is that we are both in the industry, she as management and I as a server. We are ridiculously good tippers (30-50% depending on service) and very easy to wait on as we have an inherent understanding of the industry. Sorry Capsize, you blew it. To be treated as if we weren’t planning on spending enough money to qualify for a table and then get treated like a giant pain in the rear end for inquiring about wine is beyond...
Read moreWas on a multi-day trip/celebration and Capsize was recommended. Overall it was a good experience. The location is spectacular. There is a beautiful view of the water all around from the inside. There is also an outside dining area and bar. I don't drink in general but it appeared to be a hopping place. It was also super hot out so we opted for inside.
The inside wasn't crowded but it was a bit loud with just a couple of larger families dining. No fault to the restaurant or famies, mostly just acoustics.
The wait staff was pleasant and our waitress was also friendly and engaged while present. The place wasn't super busy but there were a couple of times when our water glasses were waiting a while to be refilled. I'll chalk that up to distraction.
I ordered the crab cake. It was pretty good but not the best I've had. Def some lump meat but also clearly a good amount of filler. Taste was good. Paired with fries. And again water because no sweet iced tea. I really don't get MD restaurants hating on sweet iced tea. Ok, rant over.
Wife got fish and chips. She liked it.
Overall good. If you're in the area, check it out. Again, spectacular view, decent food and...
