Considering this may be one of the few French restaurants in Maine, it’s likely a Maine 4 or 5 but overall just an okay place.
We went because my father used to take my mother here years ago.
Our party of 5 had 4 orders of escargot. That was likely the best item we had. It was a bit weird as they serve it with a puff pastry on the top, but no snail shells, yet provide snail tongs… maybe they want you to use to pick up the small dishes they serve it in.
The side Caesar salad was just okay, with way too large chunks of shaved parm on top.
Having had duck only once before, I was encouraged because the server told us how much the other diners loved the duck. It looked like a “half spring” chicken that used to be served at my fathers diner in Ellenville NY. The sauce was okay, but I found it odd that there were mandarin oranges on top, and it tasted like they were the type of mandarin oranges from a can, that sweet flavor of canned mandarin slices. I assumed that there would be slices of oranges, especially for a 34 dish, which, i guess was inexpensive for Maine. Since i have never had Duck at a French restaurant before, maybe that’s how it’s done, but it was not my favorite. I think i would have liked a different entree. My wife had scallops in butter & breadcrumbs, and she really liked it.
One funny thing that happened was that we ordered wine for dinner, a rose I believe by the carafe. The waitress brought to the table a carafe and said that they needed to chill it, so they took it back, and came back with a carafe of wine with the entire top portion of the carafe filled with Ice. Never seen that before.
The disappointment was the French Onion Soup, which I was very excited about. It was just okay. I’ve had amazing onion gratinee at many restaurants, and this was just okay, not very flavorful.
They did have a very interesting dessert menu, and my fellow diners had a pistachio cake that I was told was fantastic.
Overall, it was not terrible, but we did have to drive almost an hour to get to this place. I’d like to give it another shot maybe...
Read moreReservations recommended. My wife and I got lucky as we did not have Reservations. That being said, they were gracious enough to give us a table. The setting is in a house converted to a restaurant with small, cozy rooms. The atmosphere was very romantic and personal. The smaller dining areas made for a very quiet dining experience. The waitstaff was very friendly and knowledgeable. My wife has food allergies and they were very accommodating. She ordered a steak dinner and I had a Mediterranean scallop dish. Fantastic food. All cooked in house and very fresh. My plate was huge. Loaded with scallops and soooo delicious. My dinner was so large that I did not have room for desert! My wife said her steak was the best she has had "in the last 10 years". Prices were extremely affordable, especially considering the quality of food and service. We will be...
Read moreWow, this place had a 50th anniversary and we have been coming to Norway ME some 29+ years.. oh boy… How did we ever miss this place. Thanks Steve S., we would have never found this place even though they are almost across from Advanced Auto Parts. For starters, good beer selection for me, my wife had an Appletini, the bread and butter, great. Details, soft butter, someone started some early prep work, simply awesome in my book. We had sirloin tip stuff mushrooms, which were good. My wife had the French onion soup, which she enjoyed. I had the crab crumb haddock, which was very good. Lastly, one of my favorite deserts after eating almost any meal is Crème Brûlée, it’s so freaking good, and lite to eat, my wife and I always share our desert, otherwise it’s just too much.. Glad we have another place to visit here in Norway. Thank you Jenn, our...
