Riviera Mexican Grill — Restaurant in Pembroke

Went to this restaurant on 5/27/2022. From the beginning the waiter seemed annoyed that we were there. It was a nice day and we asked to sit outside. He had another larger table right next to us. Our table was two adults, a 5 year old and a 1 year old. The other family also had a small one who was in a high chair. While our 1 year old prefers to sit in a regular chair, there was never even an offer of a high chair for her.

He took out drink order and I asked to go ahead and order as we'd already had plenty of time to decide. He was rather snappy and said he'd get the drinks and come back. He brought our drinks out, the children's in cups with lids, but he didn't bring them any straws. He left immediately after dropping off the drinks and tended to the other table asking if they needed anything but he never responded to my trying to get his attention to ask for straws. Finally he came back for our order and I had to ask for straws, he didn't have any with him, but said he'd get them after our order. So he took the order then came back with three straws for four drinks, and again vanished. We didn't see him again until he brought out the orders. We only ordered three items as the one year old barely eats, but I have no clue what one of the items he brought was supposed to be. I ordered a "lunch shrimp taco" he brought out one plate that was half rice and half shredded lettuce and a second plate with tortillas in foil. Luckily since we'd asked again for the fourth straw, he had to come back and I asked what he had brought me. He didn't seem to know that I had ordered the lunch shrimp taco salad even thought that's what I had said and pointed to on the menu in doing so. He took the plates back and then came back with the correct order.

We never saw him at our table again. We went inside, used the bathroom, the other table left, we finally assumed we needed to go inside and pay, so I did. He took my credit card and handed me the bill after. I asked why the bill was different from what we ordered and the prices were different. I thought there was a mixup with tables or the order he had originally given me. He simply said "I don't have time for this." I asked if I could speak to a manager then, and he offered to refund the difference in pricing. One item was billed at $7.50 instead of 6.75 and the other was 9.99 instead of 6.99. it's not a huge difference, but the attitude was uncalled for. A simple verify that we were billed for the right items and that the prices were correct would have made for a much better experience.

I wanted to like this place. Sadly, I can't recommend it. I ordered soft tacos for takeout. I regularly eat Mexican food and make my own quite often. I was shocked to see that the tortillas they were using as taco shells were identical to Great Value ones at Walmart that are nasty. I expected better. If you have seen these Great Value tortillas before you know what they are like. Very starchy and bouncy. These were identical and I'd go so far as to suggest they were GV. Aside from the truly awful starchy tortillas, the food was edible, but not particularly flavorful. I will not be eating here again. The service was also questionable as well - when I went in to pickup my order, I stood there for a while and nobody offered to help me. Finally, I found my order on a rack by myself. Long story short - the most important thing is the food and it's edible, barely, but really disappointed given...

Love this place. We've eaten here numerous times and have always found the staff to be friendly and the food to be good.

I'm a fajita person myself and the Fajita Texana is my usual go to. Cooked to perfection and served sizzling with refried beans, rice guacamole and sour cream on the side, I always enjoy it. My wife likes the Fajita Riviera which is similar to the dish I had, but no shrimp. We left stuffed as the portions are generous and they will reload your chips and salsa while you wait for the main course.

We found the service to be very good too. Drinks stay full and the staff are always pleasant. No matter who waits your table, if your drink needs a top off, someone will notice and take care of it. They also beam with delight if you speak a little Spanish with a them, so don't hesitate.

Definitely recommend a stop in for lunch or dinner. Bring your appetite....
