If you're looking for authentic Japanese food, and a cultural atmosphere, then this is not the place to go.First of all, I saw no actual Japanese people working or cooking in this restaurant. But that could've just been bc I only saw the staff who was working there on the night that I had dinner there. Still, I found it odd that a Japanese restaurant/ sushi house had no Japanese people working in it. The atmosphere was non existent. I don't understand why country music and American pop hits from 2013 were playing in a Japanese restaurant. That really threw the vibes off in my opinion. There's nothing quite like eating sushi or a bowl of yakisoba while listening to Jason Aldean.
Another thing that dampened the atmosphere was the full array of plastic silverware on the dining tables. Just why? Every other authentic Asian restaurant I've been to provides chopsticks with your meal. And if you need a fork or a spoon, they'll kindly provide you with actual silverware and not plastic ones. The abundance of plastic silverware readily sitting in a container on the table just comes off as cheap, and definitely not environmentally friendly. Granted, there was a container of wooden chopsticks in wrappers on the table as well. But unfortunately they were hidden by all of the plastic silverware. Our table was dirty when the hostess brought us to it. Crumbs were all over the seats, and the hostess left a dirty, used plastic wrapper in a ramiken that was on the table.
The food was mediocre at best. There wasn't a lot of flavor or spice. The rice and noodles were quite greasy, and the portion sizes are HUGE. We ended up not even being able to eat half our meal. It seems that the restaurant would lose money by serving such large portions, as most people either probably throw half the food away, or have to ask for a to-go box. The sushi was decent, but again, the rolls were very large.
The service itself is almost non-existent. You can either order at the counter after you're seated, or you can order off of a QR code at the table. There is no customer/ server interaction at the table. Which in my opinion, seems cold, and is something else that dampens the atmosphere. We ate here bc we were visiting Havre de Grace from Delaware, and wanted to eat somewhere close by. I love Asian cuisine, and I was disappointed by this place. It might be some people's cup of tea, but it isn't mine. If you're looking for authentic Asian and Japanese cuisine and atmosphere, then I highly recommend Ramen Kumomoto and Kanji in Newark. I wouldn't say Johnny's is necessarily "bad," it's just extremely...
Read moreI was visiting this area but could tell this place is loved by locals. I went to this place twice this week, one time for a carry out and the second time for a dine-in. Each time the restaurant was not at all empty even though it wasn’t exactly a typical meal time.
Overall, my family were very satisfied with the foods!
Sushi & sashimi: the amount of sashimi, rice and wasabi they offer was insanely generous. The sashimi on top of the sushi and the sashimi itself were very thick so you will definitely taste the fish. I was very touched and impressed. Weird that wasabi was not readily included in each sushi piece though. When I ordered a carry out the other day wasabi was nowhere to be found. But when I dined in, wasabi was served separately so I was at least able to put some on each piece of sushi myself. I thought the size of the plate made the portion size deceptively larger than what it is but no… it was just overall a very generous portion…. For sushi especially!!!!! Chicken katsu: I ordered a chicken katsu for my two little kids. My jaw dropped for the large portion size. Very generous, again. The chicken was crispy, thinly sliced, which was good for my little ones, and came with a large amount of rice. (And a fried egg and broccolis.) We all loved it. Rolls: the menu is honestly overwhelming, especially with so many options of rolls. I tried tuna with jalapeño (as part of the sushi deluxe) and spicy tuna roll (pic not included). They were amazing and I immediately understood their confidence in their long list of roll options. But, someone new may feel intimidated by the many options, like me. Stir fried rice (pic not included): I do not recommend. Go for it only if you are looking for a healthy version with less sauce. Teriyaki: similar as above (#4). Service: Given the inflation and crazy up-charged gratuity in the restaurant industry, their service model should be the standard now. You order at the counter and pay right there and they bring your foods to your table. No check-ins while...
Read moreI was so disappointed, after my friends raved so much about Johnny's. On Saturday (9/29/18) I took my fiancée to dinner for her birthday. The waitress was extremely rude, right from the beginning. It was difficult to place our order (order drinks, leave, drop off drinks, leave, refill water, leave, ask for our food order 20 minutes later). When our sushi was brought out, some of it fell off the plate, causing a mess on the floor and on my fiancée's clothes. The waitress cleaned it up and left with a meek "sorry". There was no offer to replace the food that was lost, nor was there any kind of offer to compensate any of the bill.
We had planned to order dessert, but was never given the option. The waitress dropped the check off at the table and walked away, not making any kind of eye contact. When I looked at the bill, the sushi roll that was lost was still on my bill. Not wanting to cause a scene (it's Saturday evening and the restaurant is busy), I went and spoke privately with the manager. He removed the sushi roll and apologized. I went back to my table, and handed my card and the bill to the waitress. When she returned, she SCREAMED at me. How dare I go to the manager! How dare I ask for the sushi to be removed (note: I didn't ask, the manager just removed it)! I was absolutely mortified. We just got up and left at that point, with no additional dialogue. If that's how they want to treat their guests, then they must not need my money that badly.
In terms of food, I've had better sushi (and much better service) for the $65 we dropped on dinner. All I wanted was to bring my fiancée to a nice birthday dinner, not get embarrassed by the wait staff.
Looking at other reviews, I think other people are having issues with this waitress. She's going to cause the reputation of Johnny's to tank if she keeps...
