This place! Omg what an absolute hidden gem! This place is absolutely worth checking out, especially for a special occasion out. The atmosphere is cozy, and fancy without being overwhelming. I love that this is an old schoolhouse, you can really feel that old location feeling when you walk in.
I will say we were slightly overwhelmed by the fancy menu, but our server Russell made it easy to understand, and gave his recommendations as well(Russell was an awesome server!). We ordered the giant meatball to start, this can easily be shared between 2-4 people. The meatball was so moist, the perfect amount of cheese, and that marinara sauce is so bright and wonderful! The rustic bread and holy oil are awesome, it definitely sets the mood for the meal. For our salads we ordered one of each, I personally had the Cesar salad because the other salad had ingredients I can't have, so I skipped it. The Cesar salad is that light yet flavorful dressing that I crave, it's simple in presentation, but it's just a solid choice if you're someone who doesn't like a lot going on in your salad. The casa salad is perfect for those that love a mix of flavors and textures, definitely a hearty mixture. For our pasta choice we hands down had to have the highly recommended CACIO E PEPE đ, not only is it fun to watch them prepare it table side, it's so delicious! It gives you that Alfredo taste without the heaviness, they will also bring out a house made chilli oil to compliment the pasta (start slow with it)
For our main dishes we both went with chicken. Neither of us could decide on just one, so we picked two and decided to share lol. We choose marsala, and parmigiana. The marsala is just beautiful, it's hearty with the perfectly cooked mix of mushrooms that offer different textures, the chicken was generous, juicy and cooked to perfection. The sauce, omg the sauce! Sweet, earthy and followed by the wine flavor, it's the best I've ever had. Other places taste like a mushroom gravy in comparison lol. The parmigiana was just everything it should be, the lightly breaded chicken, juicy, and covered in that bright marinara sauce that I am still thinking about two days later lol. It was perfection even the next day!
Even though both of us were absolutely bursting at this point and had plenty of leftovers, we couldn't pass up sharing a dessert. The raspberry tiramisu is an absolute must try! It's not traditional (no espresso) but they use vodka, candied almond slices , and it's just amazing. I would recommend asking for a bit more raspberry sauce because it's just that good!
With all of the food we ordered, the amazing service, beautiful atmosphere and attention to detail, the bill was under 200 with tip and worth every penny!
We look forward to making this a once a year tradition.
Notes get there early, definitely make reservations, and don't be afraid to ask questions. They do offer free vallet parking (the lot fills FAST) but we got there right when they opened at 4 so we didn't use them. This isn't a place for young children, I'd say teenager+ would be best for this establishment. This is a business casual place, but they're not strict with the requirements just use your best judgement when picking out an outfit. Enjoy the experience, and expect to be there about 1.5...
Read moreSo I've been coming here for well over 8 years (since they offered breakfast!), had many birthday parties, and even my bridal shower and bachelorette dinners here, and admittedly, it's not the same anymore. It's still amazing food, but it's not as consistent as it used to be and the staff doesn't pay you full attention unless you're a regular...heck, sometimes even then they don't. I visited last night for the first time in 3-4 years (unfortunately I've been sick and dealing with health issues so I wasn't able to join my parents and family when they go), and a lot has changed.
Patience and being honest if your order isn't correct is key now...when once you didn't have to worry about your food coming out bland or wrong. My guest and I sat waiting for a menu far too long (we estimated 15 minutes) and felt very ignored as the people around us (who showed up after us) received drinks and appetizers before we were even given menus. We almost walked out.
Smoked Provolone or the Gigantic Meatball are always a must to order, but unfortunately we did send the provolone dish back for lack of flavor and not being melty like it's supposed to be. The rest of our meals came out beautifully, with some minor errors like olives on a salad when we requested them to not be added. Everything after the appetizer was cooked to perfection and my only added comments would be that they need a GF bread option and dessert option (at least one that is baked...not gelato), and that I miss the original salad that used to have a Goat Cheese Drizzle and Beets on it.
Will I go back, yes. But will I go back anytime soon? Probably not.
Review I posted from 8 years ago: All of the dishes here are phenomenal! I have never ordered something I didn't like. And while some people may grip and groan about the wait time for their food...I say...'get a freaking life people!" If you want fast food, go to one of the many fast food chains around here, this is not fast food, it's really good food served however long it takes to freaking make it. The wait time here for your food is not bad, and they don't claim that it comes out fast anyways. You go here to have a nice multi-course meal, something that is out of the norm. IT'S NOT A MCDONALDS PEOPLE! You get bread, salad, pasta, and your meal....and you must try a drink (a margarita, the pumpkin spice martini, or the lemon berritini)! The only thing I'm not so keen on here are their desserts and that's because I used to work in a bakery ... so I know my sweets. And the only sweet that they offer, that I like, is the gelato. Favorite apps here are the Black Tiger Shrimp App (which they don't have all the time), and the Smoked Provolone App. Favorite meal is the Filet Gorgonzola,...
Read more(1/10/14) - Something fishy about the reviews. First of all, this is NOT a "$$" restaurant as the summary states. This is the full-blown "$$$$$". All entree's are $30 or more, the average about $45. reaching as high as mid-60's for some.
The food is very good. Not $50/entree good, but still very good. Thats the good news.
But I can't believe someone commented about the great atmosphere. This place is a mess inside. Its a converted old 1 room schoolhouse. The main dining area is so very crowded, you are right on top of the folks at the adjacent tables. Careful when you get up because your chair is going to knife right into someones back when you do. I hope you enjoy hearing the conversation at the table next to you because you can't help but hear everything that is said; you are that close. Then there is the fresco area. We went in January so it was "tarped" off with what had become and "off-white" tarp and duct tape....yes duct tape! Then the portable heater on the floor sounded like a train was coming through when it kicked on. Can't believe that such an "elegant" place would find this acceptable. They keep this area very dimly lit so much so that we saw someone actually using a small flashlight to read the menu. I wish we had one.
Overall service was poor; about a 3 on a scale of 10. We had a party of 4. Salad came out about 10 minutes after we ordered, which was OK. But the side dish of pasta about 45 minutes after our initial order. The main course was at least 80 minutes after we ordered. Three of our entrees came out at the same time, but the fourth one was a good 5-7 minutes after that, no reason given (don't you just love being polite and watching your food get cold, waiting for the other persons dish to arrive?). The server was slow checking on us, water glasses stayed empty for over 15 minutes before he got around to refilling. Time from when we asked for our check and when we got it was at least 10 minutes.
We spent 2 hours and 40 minutes and keep in mind, we did not order an appetizer or dessert.
Very over-rated. The well-to-do patrons will praise it since it is not a chain restaurant, its unique, its out of the way, and the high prices make it seem exclusive. But objectively, this would not make anyones top 10 list. Better meals at less than half the price can be found all around this place. And if you want to drop $250 for a party of 4, go to LeMont, Monterey Bay, Hyde Park, or some place where the food is just as good, if not better, and with a view or more comfortable...
