I was heading home on the bus with a honest hunger, cravings for a burger, and the intent to stop at Culvers to meet those desires.
I somehow passed my stop and noticed this place as the bus slowed down for the red light. I immediately noticed the retro look of the tiny building and the ad for burgera and fries, and pulled the bus' stop light when I saw the phrase " since 1951".
One thing I have learnt over the years about retro joints is that they know what good food is, what real food is, and their usually small menus gives them time to focus on ensuring the original flavor of their kraft is kept to its authenticity.
I walked in was quickly greeted by a man and lady and let them know it was my first time there. I excitingly scanned the very small menu and ordered the half pound burger with bacon, a request for grilled onions, all condiments, fries and a drink. I have a tendency to ask for avocados with burgers but they did not have it.
My order was completed in 5 minutes, and I got caught off guard with how huge the burger was! I also forgot what half pound of beef look like in a burger but that thing was loaded, including the bacon! It was hot and fresh, and the bun was warm and soft. Many places sell good burgers but I note the bun almost always has a chill to it. This place certainly made a great impression on me with warm burger buns.
The burger was perfect! The meat was full of that grilled flavor and it was juicy. All the condiments were just right. Normally food slips and alides of the burgera because of small buns, and/or too much mayo and mustard. But no, not the one at Lucky boy. It was just right.
The only reason I kept a star off were because of the fries. As hot and tasty as it was, it beheld the flavor of the frozen fries from the average burger joints. I have had better fries even at McDonald's. Derroit Coney Grill still jolds my top spot for fries, though Lucky Boy has now beaten Coney Grill in my personal favorite for burgers.😊
This place is for dine in and take out and it may be a little too warm for some, side but it has comfortable sitting and standing areas for eating. It also has good window view.
I encourage everyone to try out Lucky Boy's for their burgers. It is the best burger I have had in Pboenix so far, and I have tried a lot of different burgers so I have a lot to compare it to. You...
Read moreI am a retired chef/owner, 30 years I was in the restaurant business I moved here 4 years ago from CA and quickly found that I was in for real disappointment when searching for small Mom & Pop joints, LUCKY BOY BURGERS changed all that today. I had the BEST experience, I ordered The Original with everything and a small fries (I wanted a shake but showed some restraint on my first visit) the drive though was staffed with an ADULT that actually was having a good time doing his job and provided great service with a smile no less, GREAT SERVICE. I pulled out of driveway I cough not wait, grabbed a perfectly cooked golden brown piping hot perfectly salted fry that was cooked to absolute perfection with a pillowy what center that might be the most perfect fry I have ever had! I not going trouble you with all the double burger details, but what I will share is that was cooked to perfection on a bun that was soft but not so soft the burger fell apart and all the things you expect in an everything burger was there I would give them both 10 Stars if I could. Why anyone would go to WhataBurger of any other fast food restaurant is beyond me, I drove 30 minutes to try them and it will now be a regular stop on my list. Truly a homespun establishment, not flashy, not trendy but everything a Burger Joint should be. PLEASE GIVE THEM A TRY you will not be disappointed.
P.S. Im sorry no photos I pulled over and ate in my car. Next visit I will eat there and post as may pictures...
Read moreI've been to a few burger places in my time. I'm not boasting but I'm older, grew up in the restaurant business and I've always eaten out a lot. Lucky Boy has one of the best burgers I've enjoyed at a great price. The patties are a quarter pound that are pressed out to fit fresh, soft hamburger buns perfectly. The meat is chargrilled perfectly and served with lettuce, onion, tomato and your choice of condiments. It's typical stuff but done to perfection. The burgers come with crispy, fresh and hot steak fries. You can get sides of fried mushrooms, onions, and I'm pretty sure, zucchini. They also have homemade milkshakes. They offer about a dozen flavors and a 32 oz shake is 4.95. The burger with fries is 4.95. If you eat big you can get 2, 3, or 4 patties. There's also a 20 oz shake for 3.95. Now that I finally tried them I'm praying they never sell or go out of business. They've been there since 1951 or 1961, I forget, but either way it's amazing that something or someone has not bought them to put in a dollar store or a franchise restaurant in all those years. The place is clean but doesn't have that Disney land feel. If you don't need fancy and quality matters to you, this is your...
