Such a treat - found myself near this little Middle Eastern bakery/grocery store & stopped in to indulge my sweet tooth! I bought a Pistachio Baklava & slice of Cheese Khafeh. Then surprise! Michael the baker gave me a Walnut Finger & a Maamoul Cookie to sample.
The Walnut Finger & Pistachio Baklava are familiar: phyllo dough, honey, butter, & nuts. I munched on those right away.
Cheese Khafeh is a whole mood: it looks "simple" but put it in the microwave & it transforms. Khafeh's topped with phyllo crumbs & filled with cheese that melts when heated. Drizzle honey on top & it's ooey/gooey/scrumptious. This was my "experimental" order b/c I saw it, had no idea what it was , but wanted to try it.
Jury's still out on the Maamoul Cookie: it kind of looks like a madeleine so it's cookie on the outside. Filling is a combo of mixed nuts, rose water & something else - maybe pureed dates - & almost tastes like wine.
This is also a sweet spot to eat LUNCH: falafel, chicken shawarma, gyros and other savory dishes. The grocery story/butcher shop that connects to the bakery features groceries, frozen foods, FIVE different brand of filo/phyllo dough. Love to come back with Middle Eastern/international recipes in mind so I can buy the specific ingredients needed. Definitely an...
Read moreNow I am a big fan of baklava, and specifically pistachio baklava. So when I saw Mr. Sweets Bakery on my way home, I went in to try some of their baklava. After entering, I was mesmerized by the color of the green "pistachio" baklava fingers, It almost looked fake. I bought a pound of the "pistachio" baklava mix, which costed $4 more per pound than the normal mix, and brought it home. After trying the baklava, it hit me that it didn't really taste like real pistachio. I decided to find out if the pistachio was real, or not. as a disclaimer, the baklava was really good, compared to other baklavas in Arizona, Mr. Sweet's Baklava was up there in terms of taste because it wasn't too sweet, but still calling this pistachio, and charging more for it is just not fair. I took a piece if the "pistachio" baklava finger and put it in a glass of water, after 5 seconds the water literally turned green, I just got ripped off! I continued to search and found a "pistachio" and plopped it in the water, after taking it out, it became a peanut! I paid more for peanuts! In conclusion, Mr. Sweets Bakery is dying peanuts green, and calling it pistachios, then they're charging...
Read moreI wouldnât bother coming here if you want to try the viral Dubai chocolates. They make you call in beforehand to place an order, which I did. When I showed up, there were about 4 people already waiting, and the workers just kinda stare at you. I was told to wait 10 minutes for the chocolate, so I sat down. 10 minutes go by, nothing. The workers were just in the back and none of them came out afterwards. 1 of the other people waiting told me that they called ahead as well and sheâs been waiting for 40 minutes for her chocolate, and the other woman who was there was waiting for 20 minutes and they were both told 10 minutes. Keep in mind, outside of these 2 people, thereâs at least 3 more people waiting before me. How are you going to have people call ahead to reserve things and then not even have it ready, plus have people wait forever? Bad customer service. I walked out and left. Based on the other reviews it looks like the chocolates are mediocre anyway so it just wasnât worth the hassle or the time. Go...
