Like Mexican food? Like authentic Mexican food? If yes, then this award winning spot is the place for you! This Posolería makes some delicious posóle that is rich in traditional flavors. Its their specialty. It's made fresh every day. They prepare it three ways; rojo, blanco, or verde. Of course they have other traditional Mexican dishes also. I can always tell of an authentic Mexican location when most of the clientele are Mexican. Heck, even our server only spoke Spanish. Of course we ordered a bowl of Posóle rojo and I ordered one of their popular breakfasts, chilequiles rojo con cecina y huevos (tortilla chips topped with red chile sauce, eggs, thin cut steak). The red sauce has a kick to it and is very prominent in flavor from the red chiles. The chips are house made and crispy. The cecina which is I'm guessing a marinated flank or skirt steak cut thin and grilled. It was flavorful and what you'd expect for a cheap meal. The rice and beans were ok and could've been seasoned more. Of course the star was the posóle rojo. It was intensely flavored from the red chiles and pork. It included plenty of tender hominy. Cilantro, avocado, radishes, lemon, onion, and crunchy corn tostadas were accompaniments. The posóle had a huge piece of pork which was very tender. The pork was fork tender and shredded apart with little resistance. This was probably the best posóle we tried. Did I mention this place won Best Posóle in Phoenix four years in a row? Read moreJust got take out dinner from there and can say that its delicious! The prices were reasonable, well worth what we paid for it. The green enchilada sauce was great-- a bit spicy but not anything like burn your eye brows off crazy, the chimi's were crispy even after being smothered in an ocean of sauce. The beans and rice were well cooked and seasoned. The customer service was excellent even though there was a bit of a language barrier. Nice and friendly, she (I didnt get her name!) greeted me right away and waited while I procrastinated what I wanted. The restaurant itself was clean and well-lit. You can tell the strip its in is older so the exterior looks shady going in but that can't be helped considering the area and age. The inside had a beautiful mural on the wall even though it was beat up from the sides of chairs and tables from years of repeated abuse (again, to be expected). I was super happy with my food and experience and next time I'm prego ego is craving a chimi I'm gonna be stopping in...
Read moreI went on a Sunday morning around 11 AM as a first-time customer, and the place was absolutely packed, which to me was already a good sign. They told me the wait would be about 35 minutes, but it ended up being less than 10 minutes definitely not complaining about that.
The food was absolutely great, especially their red menudo. Prices are very reasonable too, which is always a plus. The only thing I really didn’t like was the drink situation. They don’t have refills, and when you order a Coke, it’s just a small bottle with a cup to pour it into. No soda machines or fountain drinks, which I think is pretty essential for a sit-down restaurant. If they could fix that, this place would easily be a 5 star spot for me.
Overall, it gets busy for a reason the food is worth it. I’d go back for the menudo alone, even if the drink setup isn’t ideal. Maybe next time I will just...
