I am visiting Pittsburgh for the National Senior Games presented by Humana and we decided to grab a couple of slices for lunch today. After many recommendations from the locals, we went with the fourth most recommended place. The first was a place called Fiorias but we could find absolutely nowhere to park. So being so close we decided to give it a whirl. Now getting to the big luxurious parking lot was a challenge. Not being from this city, we are not used to the one way barriers but after we turned on the GPS we eventually found our way. We received directions from a kind young gentleman at the BP gasoline service station located next to the Fioras Pizzaria. First impression of the Betos Mexican Pizzaria was 50/50. Like either this place is just gonna be another roadside pizza place or it’s going to be delightful. After that it kind of went downhill rapidly. It wasn’t possible to give the customer service a negative rating so I’m choosing right here in my review to do so. I understand local restaurants have their regular customers, but I just don’t think it’s right when I am waiting in line and somebody walks in multiple times and get service before me I guess because they are a regular. I am a senior Pickleball champion, and having a championship match today I very well am probably going to have to forfeit my match due to the vomiting and explosive bowel movements every 8 minutes. I understand people have their quirks and claim to fame, but serving uncooked food is not only risky but can be dangerous. So as I’m sitting in Allegheny General Hospital emergency room stay tune for a part two of this review.

Quick, yummy, filling, surprising that non melted mozzarella cheese can be actually good on a pizza. The crust is thick about 0.75 inches and the rims are crunchy. The crust is more like bread than chewy (I prefer chewy but to each’s own). The portions are huge so it will fill you up to just have a cheese slice. Each topping is 60 cents extra per topping on top of the base pizza individual slice with cheese which is $1.92 per slice. The onions, mushrooms, tomato slices were good toppings but I didn’t like the green peppers which were overcooked. Some might like it well done (they steamed or boiled it) but I like the color to be greener and closer to being fresh. Other than that I liked my cheese to be baked. But I tried the non baked cheese and it was still good. Your preference. This is first come first serve seating (no booking a table) so don’t come during rush hour times bc you will be waiting or you should take it home.

Honestly I don’t understand what the appeal of cold cheese and toppings are on a hot crust. I like cold pizza if it’s already been baked but this is a stretch. Beto’s takes all the fun out of a pizza. No cheese stretch, in fact it all just falls all over the place because it’s shredded and cold. I see why people got their cheese in bags on the side to go. This place would have been better had it not been for the Umpteenth other customers who keep the place busy and the lines long. Waiting over half an hour for a cold pizza is kinda frustrating when you know the effort it actually takes to make a Lunchable pizza. I even heated it in my own oven and the pizza being warm is mediocre at best. The crust is crispy, the sauce is somewhat sweet, and the cheese is below par even when melted. If you want a good pizza by the slice from Pittsburgh got to Mineos or even Aielos, Beto’s is a novelty of Southwestern PA.

You have to read the whole review to understand my rating!

I get that this place is famous for it's special style of pizza, and I will admit that cold raw cheese that isn't browned has no appeal for me. Therefore I won't say anything about the pizza. Still, I would expect an "Italian Restaurant" to be able to serve up more than just good pizza. So today on my way to work I decided to grab a grilled chicken salad. I should have bailed on the idea as soon as the girl taking my order asked if I wanted grilled or fried chicken on my grilled chicken salad, but I went for it anyway. It was by far the worst grilled chicken salad I have ever (not) eaten. It started in the car as I was driving and I noticed that the chciken had sort of a funny smell, kind of like bologna (yuck). When I got to work, I took the salad out and opened it. The veggies looked great...nice and fresh and plentiful. But the smell of the chicken was a definite turnoff. I tasted a piece and I was right...it was awful. It tasted like the Oscar Meyer precooked chicken you get at the grocery store. It was very low quality and was cold. Also, the menu said the grilled chicken salad came with fries, which it didn't. What it did have was a huge pile of half-melted cheese - not completely unexpected I suppose, although I am baffled as to how the cheese melted on top of cold chicken. The Italian dressing was two packets of Marzetti Light Italian. I would have expected something a little closer to homemade from a place that claims to be an "Italian Restaurant". The Marzetti dressing was horrible and tasted like straight vinegar. In the end, it didn't matter anyway since I didn't eat it. I will be hard pressed to go back there.

UPDATE: While I stand by my previous review about that salad, I have since tried their Pizza and it is phenomenal! If you're thinking pizza with cold cheese sounds terrible like I was, try it anyway! You will be surprised!!

So my new takeaway... Go to Beto's for the pizza and forget...

The place was packed and we couldn't understand why. We stopped on our way out of Pittsburgh because it was on the way and got a 4.5 star review. But seriously???? The service was terrible, bad attitudes, everything came out at different times. Even1 some of the customers were rude. Our order of nachos was a cup of cheese dip and a bag, yes a bag, of nachos. They couldn't even be bothered to open the bag and put them in a basket. We ordered a hot sausage sandwich & buffalo ranch chicken wings that were very good. The mozzarella sticks were decent but lacking a bit of seasoning. The fries were blah. Two of us finally got our pizza 20 minutes after the rest of our group was done eating. And worst of all the pizza, which they have been making for 70 years and are supposedly known for, tasted like a Marc's frozen pizza warmed up with a pound of cold cheese and cold pepperoni thrown on top, not even good pepperoni. Their schtick is slices of cooked dough with sauce and then all of the toppings, including the cheese, are put on cold and served. I was told we'd have to wait an additional 15 minutes for pizza with cooked toppings. We ordered 4 slices of pizza which all came out on one "tray" - styrofoam plate - none of us got an actual plate to eat off of. Cheap plastic silverware (my husband had to pull out his pocketknife so we could cut the pizza), napkins, and soda were all self serve. The place was dirty. Bathroom stalls didn't lock. Not at all a pleasant experience. Bright spot - it was relatively inexpensive. You get what...
