Consistently good and innovative.
Fall 2025: The last of the Wednesday live on the patio is gone until spring. It's down to just to tier one of a kind beer until daylight saving time returns.
Spring 2025: They're making some really great sours and dark beers. Most of the beers have relatively high alcohol content. The barrel aged special releases have been hard to get because they sell out to members before they're available to the general public.
Winter 2025: I keep coming back because they keep making very good, strong flavored, high quality beers. Their most produced styles are hoppy and hazy.
Spring 2024: There have covered outdoor seating and the place seems to be busy every evening. They've expanded their beer selections but still orbit the hazy IPA foundation of their biggest sellers. They typically have a great sour or two, a brown, a stout, and porter.
End of 2023 update: Very good beer. Main tasting room is modern, very clean, and subtly decorated. They have been working on the quality of their beer for years and it shows. They keep getting better and the offerings are unique to this brewery. They also have cocktails made strictly from their own clear malt brew.
2024 The beer just keeps getting better. They have a lot of hazy IPAs, but they also offer a kolsch, a brown, some stouts, and a neutral fermented sparkling drink that they make cocktails from. Their specialty is IPA, but people who like browns and porters really like their versions of those too, so it's not as if they only do IPAs well.
They don't offer food directly, but they have a food truck on site whenever they're open, so you can always get food. They seem to attract the best for trucks in the area, more quality than quantity, which means it's not unreasonable to come with high expectations.
It's crowded on busy days, and rightfully so.
The beer in 2021 was consistently good, but it was generally either 3 or 4 out of 5. It's good beer, but not legendary. In 2024 the beers were still sometimes just a 3, but more and more they're hitting 5 star beers and most of it comes in at a solid 4.
January 2023 - I think the beer has gotten a bit better. Some of their early offerings were strong and eccentric tasting. But now things seems a bit more balanced and maybe a little mellower too. Their stuff is definitely not typical. If you're an adventurous beer drinker, this is a good place to experience things on the wilder side. They used to make beers that I would rank about a 3 out of 5. The entire line is still mostly between 2 and 4 to my tastes, but I think the whole offering is leaning more toward the 4s in the winter of 2023.
July 2023 - the tap room and brewery have moved to the airport industrial complex. The beer is the same. The tap room is bigger, cleaner, and has a completely different style. They have a large outdoor seating area now. More to come once I get more time to decide what I think of the new location.
October 2023 - the new tap room is modern, clean, casual, and sleek. It looks like no other microbrewery tap room that I've ever seen. They have as much seating outside as they do inside and large glass doors to make the majority of one wall disappear when the weather allows them to fully open it. They have food trucks every day. The pizza truck, Carrozza, makes top quality Neapolitan style small pizzas in traditional varieties as well as novel types such as Thai curry and bulgogi beef with kimchi. The pizza truck is open most evenings, but when it's not they have other offerings. The beer is as good as ever. They now make sparkling malt cocktails. The staff are excellent, friendly, knowledgeable, efficient, and professional. The only downside to Mothfire this summer was how crowded it became. From the minute they opened they were busy. Things seem to be taming down to more sane levels now, but expect to have plenty of company whether you decide to stop in.
June 2024 - it's gotten busy. There's regularly a line at the ordering counter, but it moves very quickly even when the place is packed. It's...
Read moreListen! No! Seriously! Listen here! This is by far my favorite brewery in Ann Arbor. Yes, I have love and a special place in my heart for the others, but this is THE ONE! The pizza from the truck or the tacos are just to die for amazing and compliment the beer so well. Now, on to that beer! It is everything! IPA forward and centric, but the sours and the regs are also incredible. The flavor profiles are so smooth and unlike anything else. Especially the sours! Don’t like beer!? They have a hard seltzer and make hard seltzer ‘cocktails’ that are so delicious and interesting. Or you can have the seltzer straight up. The staff is wonderful, the beer is impeccable and the patio is undeniably nice. Located just down the street from Briarwood Mall! Please give them a try! If you are a beer fan, you will find something to enjoy! Sometimes they have pop ups like ones from Junk Jules who sells great bakery items. This is a cool place to go and hang out. It doesn’t have the best parking lot, but it does have the best little taproom/brewery without the extreme bustle and hustle of downtown. Please go here. I’m from Livingston county and this is my go to. They deserve the love. You won’t be disappointed with the range of fun that comes with this place, beer flavors and community. This...
Read moreGreat beer. Fun atmosphere. HAPPY staff, which is nice to see. The line can get long, but moves very quickly. The staff is helpful with suggestions, but I recommend reading the menu while standing in line - most people did that and it seemed that the line went faster - but the staff was available to answer any questions and they were super helpful with me. The female with shorter reddish hair is outstanding...She helped me make my selection. We literally watched her run the show...She was on top of everything and did it all with an inviting smile....while giving care to each pour. She was helping customers, the staff, the back of the house and the front. She was literally on everything. The rest of the staff to followed her tone. They were all working so hard. All with smiles and enthusiastic energy. Loved the Blackberry Mist.... Great selection of fruity sours for a hot summer day. They had some fizzy cocktails also. I tried the grapefruit one and it was amazing. I suggest you try it out if you are in the area and even if you're not, it's worth the drive for the fruity sours and fizzy drinks! Super so...
