This is the best hot dog place in West Michigan, bar none. The hot dogs are first class without any toppings (really tasty dogs with no filler), and the toppings are eclectic but all work incredibly well even if they sound weird (try the Goofy - peanut butter and pickles - and you'll understand). The dogs are all named, and you should definitely try the Hound, the Chi-Chi, the Goofy, the Mac Daddy, the Wild Hog (be prepared for the bacon wrapped dog) and the Chilimacaloco (might have to cut this one up). There are lots of others, too.
In addition the service is fabulous, your dogs are never cold (they monitor your progress and bring them to you one at a time) and the specialty sodas are delicious (love the Sammi Rae black cherry). When you throw in the fact that Marco and Diane are two of the friendliest, hardest working people you could ever know you get a place that can't be beat.
I've eaten hot dogs in 47 states and two foreign countries and am an acknowledged expert in the field of hot dog cuisine, and the only dogs I've ever had that were definitively better were the traditional Chicago style at Superdawg on Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago and two specialty dogs at Hot Doug's in Chicago (which is now closed). I drive all the way from Kalamazoo to eat here, and believe me, it's worth it. Prices are really low when compared to value. There is nothing but class to be found at...
Read morePretty good. Lots of different hot dog combinations. Some seem odd to me, but then again I'm a bit of a hot dog snob. All I want is a good Chicago style hot dog. How hard can that be? Has anyone in the hot dog business ever been to Chicago. I realize this is somebody's business, they are taking the risk to provide products and services. Let me help. First, you need a steamed bun. Maybe you can't get the poppy seed bun in GR, but at least you could do is steam the bun. Next, a pickle spear. Not chopped pickles. The same with the tomato. Tomato wedges, not chopped. Frankly, it comes across as very "food service" when everything is chopped. Like you opened a can from GFS. Think salad on a bun. Props for the celery salt and no ketchup. It was an ok dog, but just not what I was expecting when ordering a Chicago dog. The bottom line is that I'm likely to be back and I'd recommend this...
Read moreWhenever I can I will go out of my way to support a local business; this sometimes comes at the expense of location and price, but not with Mad Dogz. Located in downtown Comstock Park the location is very convenient and the cost is what you would expect from a hot dog restaurant. Previously, I lived on the other side of town and grew accustomed to the menu from another (popular) restaurant. After some discussion I asked about the chilly dog; chilly can mean so many different varieties and I was concerned that it might be spicy. The gentleman behind the counter scoffed and exclaimed that chilly on a hot dog should never be spicy; it would ruin the flavor. At that point I was sold. I'm very happy this is so local to me as I will be...
