My partner found ithis place and he brought home doubles and pholouri to try. Doubles was good, but pholouri wasn't.
We decided to drop by last Friday (April 19th), and was disappointed and disgusting by the food presentation. I wanted doubles, but the tray that the channa was in, the rim of it was a thick layer of dried up channa, like it was out there since 7am, and no one was checking on it turning it with a spoon or anything. I told the server nah, I'm good and she didn't even care to take it out and maybe take it to the back and put it in a new tray. Couldn't care less. I looked around and all the dishes in trays and it all looked the same. Gross.
It was disgusting to see and I decided at that moment, I'll pass on ordering anything from here. My partner tried the bake and shark, and it was not good at all. Maybe it was an off night. However, the server didn't care to make a change anyway, so why even order.
I was disappointed because I was excited to have a trini spot so close, especially that the doubles was good, but it turned out to be a negative. No pride in the food and presentation.
I'll stick to going to Trenton to Annie's Hot on D-Spot Roti Shop. Everything there is soo good all around.
Give this place a try and make your own decision.
Hope this...
Read moreFor those who may not know, Down D Islands Roti shop specializes in bringing the varying tastes of Trinidadian cuisine, also known as Trini cuisine to New Jersey. They’ve mastered the art and science of combining the vibrant fusion of flavors reflecting the diverse cultural influences of the island. This culinary tradition is a melting pot of African, Indian, Chinese, and European cuisines, resulting in a rich tapestry of taste and texture.
Their doubles is a quintessential Trini street food. It’s a sandwich made with two pieces of fried flatbread (bara) filled with curried chickpeas (channa). The bara is soft yet slightly chewy, providing a perfect contrast to the tender, flavorful channa. The curry is fragrant with spices such as cumin, coriander, and turmeric, balanced by the tang of tamarind sauce and the heat of pepper sauce. This dish is a delightful explosion of flavors, ideal for a quick, satisfying snack. Down D Islands Rotishop have truly fulfilled all my needs and ensured that at the end of my time spent at their establishment, my stomach was filled and I was fully satisfied.
I recommend this place to all my Trini people that needs a place to call home, and to all the foreigners that wants to experience a taste of Trinidad &...
Read moreI'm going to have to be honest with this review I like this place more because it's convenient from going all the way to Brooklyn or Queens to go get doubles. Which is one of my favorite dishes or I should say favorite hand food. But the atmosphere looks great it has a Caribbean vibe to it because they're newly open I can understand why it's not more Caribbean vibish. But that's for Americans to feel that im kool with the vibes i got. But customer service is okay for the most point. I didn't sit in there long I just got to go I'm going to go back again and try it some more so that'll definitely give a better review next time. But the doubles I'm going to have to say they are the best in Plainfield very spicy and fresh good taste but I'm so used to the spot in Queens and Brooklyn that is going against a hard competition but for the most part it is great so rating it 1 out of 10 I'll...
