I'm truly amazed. I live in Asheboro and regularly go to Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem and Charlotte for my sushi. It's a meal option that is sadly missing in this area. I'd seen a sign on an Asheboro restaurant that actually had "Sushi" in the title. Knowing that my sister and her daughter were coming for a visit and both are sushi fans too, I was excited to try a local place in hopes of taking them there. Sadly, I got inside and was informed that they were looking for a new sushi chef that met the owner's high standards but they had heard that a place in Randleman had pretty good sushi. Wow, I couldn't believe they were directing me elsewhere but I appreciated the honesty and set off to find this other place. I wound up here at Sakura and was very pleasantly surprised. The place is small, but adequate and extremely clean. The staff were friendly and respectful of my slow deliberation of their menu. A menu, I might add, that was quiet varied and appealing, one you would not expect to find in a town as small as Randleman. Don't get me wrong, I love Randleman but we all know it's not a metropolis. I ordered my rolls to go since I'd really already spent more time looking for places than I'd planned and was told it would be about 10 minutes. I sat at the bar and no sooner had I gotten comfortable than the waitress offered me a tea as I waited. By the time I'd had chance to get the straw in the lid and have a few sips, the chef was bringing my order to me very neatly packaged. I got home and found a treasure trove in that bag, each roll neatly in it's own tray and presented beautifully. I'd not asked for anything other than chopsticks but they'd packed plenty of soy sauce and mixing cups for each roll. I'm always a bit skittish of new places when it comes to sushi so taking off the lids was an experiment to see how much of that fishy smell wafted out... there was none. Perfect! Each item was beautifully rolled, tight enough to stay together when grasped but still loose enough to allow each texture to come through. Each various fish was fresh and delicious. The only disappointment was that the tempura shrimp seemed to be a pre-breaded piece rather than freshly battered and fried. For a "fast-food" restaurant, I truly don't think you could ask for better. Sure there are fancier, more expensive places and yes, they do have more variety and some of the less common ingredients, but Sakura holds a strong place in the niche of convenient and affordable fare. I would certainly recommend this little jewel to others and will definitely be revisiting it myself. I can't wait to try their many other options since this time around, I only splurged...
