I love a good fish fry. I was very impressed with the variety of dishes available. I have many reasons to come back. This place is almost a hidden gem at its location.
The fish was very nicely cooked and reasonably seasoned. A few over cooked bits here and there but those were the thin edges.
I did chew into a hidden fin before I realized it wasnât just crunchy fish. Be careful!
Their fries were also on point. Great internal texture and beautiful crunch on the outside. Iâd come back for the fries too!
Dipping sauces were generous servings of ketchup, tartar sauce, and hot sauce. No complaints there either.
I also tried additional sides.
Fried mushrooms: quite good but over cooked. That knocked some points off of that for me.
Red beans and rice: cooked properly but not seasoned at all. It tasted mostly like bean water. Now this can be salvaged. I took it home and mixed in a bit of onion powder, smoked paprika, drop of liquid smoke, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Just a small dash of each consistent with the amount in the to-go serving cup. That woke the dish right up. Now you shouldnât have to do this. They should be. Iâd be wary of ordering this side again.
Onion rings: sadly, this place is on the same onion ring plan as Burger King. Now if thatâs your âyumâ, I donât mean to âyuckâ it. But fried onion-flavored paste formed into a ring shape is not my idea of an onion ring. If you want to try a good fast food onion ring, check out Fat Burger. They get it right. If youâre okay with Burger King onion rings, then this is pretty much the same.
Beverage: bottled water. Now I got this because they had no flavored beverages that didnât have either sugar or an artificial sweetener. Thatâs a real oversight. Not everyone wants to drink their sugar. On top of that those who donât want to drink their sugar donât necessarily want a weird tasting sweet substitute instead. Sweet isnt always necessary in a beverage, and ânot sweetâ shouldnât mean âchemicallyâ or âjust waterâ. More options here would be great.
Overall I will return for what they get right. Fried fish and fries! They nailed it. Just, again, watch out for fins...
Read moreLet me start with what was good. My fish was fried soft as I asked, the amount of food was was suffice. Quality of the meat was good. Now the bad. No seasoning, the fish, the greens and the red beans and rice. I threw away the beans and rice. The biggest issue I had was my poor planning for dinner. This caused me to visit this business for the 2nd time in over 7 years. Ive live in Richmond over 15 years.I should have ordered ahead to have fish for dinner from the other fish spot. The customer service is the reason I never came back and will be the reason I won't return EVER. No one was in building, the phone was not ringing, and since I haven't been there in a looooong time I needed to study the menu to determine what I wanted to order. The young lady at the register had no patience and acted as if I needed to hurry because she had other customers. My apologies is she tired, but so was I this is why I brought dinner. The menu was unclear. I ordered a combo thinking it was fish and 2 sides. Because most combo are usually an entree and sides. Well their combo is 2 kinds of fish and fries. She explained this with an attitude , every question was answered rudely with an attitude. I said to myself forget dessert. I could have left but again I was tired and wanted fish for dinner. Therefore I will keep it moving and plan better when I decided I want...
Read moreThe food was phenomenal! I was visiting Richmond for a concert and googled soul food. JJ Fish & Chicken was the closest location so we went. From the Richmond Civic Auditorium JJ Fish & Chicken was easy to find. Parking was available at the time we arrived but I can see how it could be a problem on a more active day. Thereâs only parallel parking. When you walk in thereâs plenty of space to place your order and a dining area to sit to enjoy the food. The restaurant and its restroom were spotless. This was probably one of the cleanest restaurants ever ate at. When we walked in, we were greeted right away and placed our order from a wide variety of selections. I get the fish and chicken combo with fries, red beans/rice, Cole slaw, hush puppies, potato salad, Mac&cheese, fried okra, sweet potato cake and the best pineapple lemonade ever. I enjoyed everything (except the mac&cheese. It tasted like it was straight from a Kraft box). Everything was seasoned to perfection. The portions sizes are pretty generous so youâll be full for the money you paid. We had a lot leftover. The second meal was just as filling and tasty from the leftover. I had a great experience and would...
