Just changed rating from 5 stars to 3 stars. Today, I stopped into Bishop`s Corner Cafe. The cook that was there before was fired.
The regular customers still give it a "Cheers" vibe.
visited Bishop's Corner Cafe for the 1st time last Thursday around 2 p.m.. Was immediately greeted by some of the customers & waiter/bartender Charlie. Though the name says "cafe", to me, it was more like a bar & grill or sports bar. There were 3 televisions showing different basketball games.
Italian hoagie w/fries was the special, which I ordered, along with fresh brewed iced tea. Charlie was a terrific personable waiter (& I am a tough critic since I used to be a waitress as well as a manager & restaurateur).
The bun was well toasted, & the sandwich was well balanced with meat, dressing, lettuce, tomato. The fries seemed to be double fried, which I really enjoyed. Never had to ask Charlie to refill my iced tea. He was on the ball. He waited until after I finished my meal before giving me my bill, which I considered polite. I then ordered coffee. Charlie asked if I wanted cream & sugar. My reply was "it depends on the coffee". Even though the coffee was good & I ended up not needing anything in it, Charlie still courteously placed creamer & sugar in front of me in case I needed it.
I was really impressed when one of the customers asked Charlie what kind of turtle was in the turtle soup. Not only was Charlie able to answer "snapper turtle", but he was able to tell the customer that the snapper turtle was bought at Wholey's in the strip district.
Great experience Thursday, so I gave 50% tip.
Returned the next day around 11 a.m. to buy lunch to take to my husband who worked at the business park a few minutes from the cafe. The special Friday was Big Fish sandwich, fries, slaw, with the option of replacing fries with 5 cheese macaroni. Ordered fish sandwich with both tarter & cocktail condiments on side & french fries. Hubby later told me that he enjoyed the fish (with tarter sauce) & french fries. It was really good.
After taking lunch to Hubby, I returned to the cafe to buy lunch for myself, ordering fish sandwich, 5 cheese macaroni, slaw. There was a different server on Friday. Remember, I was in the restaurant business for years, & have been to chef school, so what I noticed may not be a big deal to others, but this is why I did not give 5 stars....Friday was not as good as Thursday for me, so I only gave 10% tip.
Negatives from Friday: the server was wearing 3 inch heels, which is a safety issue when serving. the server did not refill my iced tea until it was drained for a while, then she asked if I wanted a refill. Did not refill my coffee at all. When I asked, her, reply was that she already emptied the coffee machine. Then asked me if I wanted her to make another pot. I replied "no" disappointedly. she set down my check as soon as she served me my food while I was still eating. the cocktail sauce was partially frozen. I had to cut it up with my knife. the fish came with no accompaniments except for the cocktail sauce...& the bun was barely toasted & tasted aged. the 5 cheese macaroni, to me, was extremely mild, tasting mostly of soft Italian cheeses like mozzarella & provolone. To be fair, taste is subjective, & there may be those who prefer very mild cheesy macaroni. Plus, there was hot sauce at the bar which I used in my macaroni. For myself, I would have preferred the addition of a sharper cheese, some hot sauce, & a crust on my macaroni & cheese, but that again is just personal preference. there were dogs allowed to come into the cafe, which probably broke several health code violations, but I found to be adorable. I also thought it was nice that the server filled a dog bowl with water for the dogs.
To me, the cafe, in a way, reminded me of the television show "Cheers".
It has a terrific location being off the freeway & within minutes from a business park, with a lot...
Read moreWe really enjoyed Bishop's! It's the very picture of a small family owned and run local watering hole, and you can tell the Bishops do it out of love and loyalty for their community. We're in the process of moving to to Pittsburgh area and we've been checking out neighborhoods we might want to live.
The food was excellent! We had the mushroom and Swiss burger, a steak sandwich, house made chips, and onion rings. The burger was juicy and perfectly cooked to order. The roll used for the sub was perfect.
A group of local men held court at the bar, getting to know and looking out for one another in that gruff, rust belt way.
It's small, dark and intimate inside. Vinyl on both the booths and table tops. No taps, just beer in bottles and mixed drinks. The kind of place you go for good food and to be around...
Read moreThis bar/restaurant is fantastic! I would give it 15 stars if I could. The bartender, Charley, is incredibly talented. He made the BEST espresso martini I have ever had. The food was delicious. My husband and I each got fish sandwiches which tasted incredible. Their soups are homemade and we tried the seafood chowder and their cream of mushroom soup. Both soups were out of this world! Compliments to the chef, for sure! The atmosphere was wonderful. The natural handmade wooden bar-top is a focal point for sure! Overall it was a really enjoyable time! This is a great spot and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! You won’t be...
