My family is originally from Dixon, IL. I have many memories of driving back there to visit grandparents and distinctly remember the billboard for the Galena Avenue location on the way into town being there for decades. I don't think I actually ever went to the Dixon location. I have, however, visited the location in Rock Island a few times and enjoy that location.
Arthur's is set up to serve sandwiches and the associates sides cafeteria style. You place your order for your sandwich, pick up a tray, select your other sides along the counter, then pay at the register. From order to sandwich acquisition I think I might have waited a total of 3-4 minutes. Such speed!
The laid back and plebian nature in which you get your food extends to the dining area, as well. Wood paneling transitions to a dull plaid carpet, HVAC and air movement is handled by a combination of ceiling fans and diffusers along the ceiling, and lighting is low, provided by individual fixtures over the booths along the periphery and a series of accent light strips in some places. Prominently displayed along the ceiling is a cast metallic floral tiled area, which lends a look of age and sophistication to the space. I feel compelled at this point to clarify that I'm not judging any of these features. The space is warm and unfussy and was perfect for the sandwich and chips I got for dinner. I was relaxed and enjoyed my visit here.
This enjoyment extended to the sandwich and chips as well. I selected a pastrami and Swiss with Dijon mustard on a wheat sub roll with kettle chips to accompany. Both were fantastic. The chips (Cape Cod brand) were exactly what kettle chips should be - crisp, salty, and just a little greasy. The pastrami sandwich was great too - the meat and cheese were fine, the bread was ever so slightly warmed, and the whole thing came together to be a great sandwich. I'd definitely get this again.
Although I like Arthur's, it's a 40 minute drive from work and about a 30 minute drive from home in Bettendorf, so I probably won't be back any time soon. If you're close by, I'd recommend stopping in. The food is simple and good - just what I needed tonight....
Read moreThis used to be a favorite place until today. After we had ordered and had our food, we were told that they had new software that would decline Chase Cards. I was shocked as I always used my Chase Card there. They had to call the owner while we stood there. I had no cash, but I offered a check. No one knew what to do about that. I watched as they were able to take card after card but not a Chase Card? Finally, they came back and said I would have to call my bank. We said goodbye and left. Why would I call my bank for a software problem they have. When I asked why they didn't put a note on the door saying they were having problem with Chase cards they couldn't answer me. You would think they would rather comp a meal or take an IL check then embarrass people who eat there often. I went to their website to email the owner and found there was no way to contact the owner who had been on the phone. No none came to talk to us who was a manager. They left the poor kid checking us out standing there. We stood there like deadbeats. I won't feel...
Read moreI just got home from ordering some food for my husband and I. I eat my soup and open up the box to my sandwich only to find that the bread was completely dry. So dry, it was cracking.. I have never had this issue with them ever. So, of course I call and ask for the Manager who I explain to about the issue. She in turn tells me that this has happened and the bread does get dry. I can understand slightly dry, but this bread was stale and it was not acceptable. So, she offers for me to give her my name and she will replace the sandwich on the next visit. Well, I’m hungry so I just said my husband will be coming in and I proceed to tell her now his food is going to get cold and she says that it’ll warm up in the microwave! First off, it wouldn’t be an issue if they wouldn’t have given us stale bread! Second, why should my husband have to reheat a potato because they didn’t do their job? He offered to go back because I just got back from there. The manager is a joke. She clearly has no idea what...
