Finally got to try Wunderbar after wanting to for a couple years since they opened! Made an early dinner reservation and was seated promptly at a tiny table (uggh) RIGHT next to another couple. Why do restaurants do this?! Literally no one wants to hear a stranger's whole conversation or their chewing! We would've had to whisper the whole time to even have a conversation. Thankfully, my husband quickly caught on that this was going to be an extremely uncomfortable date if we didn't move, so he asked for a different seat. All the booths were available at this time and the host let us know that they had parties arriving soon but there was one booth available for 45 minutes. That was plenty of time for us, even though the booking automatically had us down for 1.5 hours. Maybe this is due to some guests having a 3-4 course meal, which is how the menu suggests it, but we were just having 1 course. The booth was beautiful and I was so happy we moved! I ordered one of their craft cocktails (the bee's knees) and it was beautiful and strong!! The menu was simple, which I appreciate because it indicates a fresh supply of food, but both of us struggled to choose something we were excited to order. We went with 4 small plates to share (everything here is on the small side, so you may want to order a couple items). The soup wasn't impressive, the ahi tuna tostadas and kale salad were good, the BAO BUNS were AMAZING - those I will come back for!! Service was great - everyone was super friendly. And the atmosphere is pretty cool! Check out my...
Read moreGreat food and delicious cocktails! Beer list was strong with some VT all star choices. See photo.
All of the food and drink that our party had was excellent, we left full and satisfied. There are a good variety of dishes for all tastes. Delicious meat, some great gluten free options, and some vegan things. It's not a big menu and I have the feeling it changes fairly frequently so I won't mention anything specific and leave you disappointed. Instead just try a bunch of stuff, a lot of dishes here can be shared. Both of the things served in mini cast iron skillets that we got were excellent.
The deserts were awesome. Shrouded in mystery; and a little aquafaba.
Alain was a great host, waiter, etc. His demeanor was as vibrant as the art and decor that filled the space.
The only area that could be improved was the place settings; the food came out as it was ready but was hard to share without each having a plate. Cloth napkins would have been lovely, as would some little bbq hand wipes to clean up after holding the amazing maple glazed ribs.
5/5!! Will be back even though it's about...
Read moreIf Wunderbar were located in a large city like Burlington or Concord it might get lost in the crowd. But located in small village in southern Vermont? Absolutely amazing.
Downtown Bellows Falls is actually a very cool and historic area and the vibe and decor of Wunderbar do it justice. Especially at night when the mood lighting is on at the bar and such.
Reservations are almost a must, especially on weekends but service was good and our waitress was very friendly and helpful.
Food-wise was very diverse and interesting menu options skewing more towards Asian/latin cuisine than other tapas places that go very European. As a vegetarian I personally thought the Tofu Bao Buns were incredible but everything our table tried was good. Portion sizes were on the standard to slightly larger size for tapas with 2-3 plates per person being more than enough. I liked that many of the ingredients seemed local and well sourced.
Overall would definitely recommend for those in the area looking for a special night out. Easily worth a...
