What a pleasant hidden gem in South Rockwood. Next to 75 on Gilbralter right before the tracks. Parking in back.
You wouldn't know it from the outside but the food was pretty dang good. It looks just like any other vintage neighborhood drinking establishment from the 30s or 40s. Looks like it was once an old house back in the day. The service was top notch and prices were decent. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with Cole slaw and a bowl of white chicken chili and my friend ordered a broiled chicken sandwich with a simple iceberg salad. The slaw was the only thing i didn't enjoy, it tasted off somehow. My friend tried it and she too thought it was an odd flavor but said she's had it before and didn't remember it tasting strange. We couldn't place what spice was added to affect the taste. My pulled pork sandwich was tender, juicy and delicious and was served generous amount on an ordinary bun. There was so much meat piled high that i ended up took half home for a midnight snack later on. They had 3 bbq sauces on the table. Hot. House and some type of vinegar mustard. I preferred the house, smoky and slightly sweet. My friend liked the vinegar mustard. The white chicken chili wasn't white like I've had at other places but it was very very good. They added some type of tomato ingredient (i think) which isn't in a typical white chili recipe making theirs kinda pinkish color... but whatever it was, it totally worked. I would order the white chili again. If you're a die hard no tomato white chili fan then be forwarned. But go ahead and give it a try. We liked that our soft drinks were refilled without asking and before they were empty. The menu featured several tempting bbq items that i would like to try on future visits as well as traditional burgers and numerous appetizers, etc it was hard to make up my mind. We orderd the pretzel bites. Yummy. Next time I'll order the fried pickle fries and i need to try the mac n cheese.
The atmosphere is that of your typical neighborhood bar type decor but not dark or seedy. A pool table over by the bar and plenty of regular tables to sit plus a separate area with tables for diners. Plenty of folks there but not too loud or crowded. There was a lovely family present with their school age daughter and their grandparents in the dining area that stopped for a quick chat about the weather as they were leaving. Very nice.
I was only disappointed the bathroom sink was stopped up (ew) when i went in to wash my hands but i didn't use the facilities to notice if they were stopped up too. So one star off the atmosphere grade for that. I normally can judge a restaurant on how well they pay attention to the bathrooms so this one looked presentable enough for a bar type place. But the attentive staff more than made up for the slight inconvenience of the sink. Im sure it's fixed by now. I didn't expect a 5 star restaurant ambiance when we decided to go.... i expected exactly what it was... The local Pub n Grub. I will definitely return for the friendly faces...
Read moreI have been coming here since i was younger doing free shoots at the train. Always a great safe time her. I've always enjoyed the food and especially the brisket. Unfortunately not today. I understand we are in post covid and all, but highly recommend a manager to over see lunch especially on Fridays. The waitress was very overwhelmed with the computer system. There were several larger top tables 4- 4 tops 3- 2 tops and people at the bar. I felt so bad I asked if I could help. These types of places only work if everyone works together. Cook definitely should have helped run food and cooked starting from appetizers. Soups and salads came out after meals appetizers for some tables came out in the middle of the meal. Waitressing is difficult as it is but having noone to help is worse. The phone is ringing and she has 2 hands. Now on to the food... Wow did I just spend 72.00 in dry over qued (microwave) brisket and pulled pork? Did I just order a med well burger and get a hockey puck yes that happened. We should consider holding the brisket in some juices not reheating it wasn't even warm when it hit the table but my Mac n chess was super hot . I did voice my concerns about everything being very dry and she just apologized and said it's not usually like this .. well then... let's not serve it then. Again I understand all the details that go in to restaurant life, and how difficult staffing can be ,But I was completely disappointed and I feel that the other customers...
Read moreWent in to try it after a good friend said it was pretty good earlier in the week, sadly tonight was not the night for bbq, our waitress was friendly and polite and fairly diligent in her service. The food was unfortunately very sub par, the brisket was so over salted it tasted like corned beef not bbq, the pull pork was just the same as you got any bites with bark in it. The concern from me comes when the waitress said the normal cook wasn't in and someone else was in and was supposedly following a recipe for the seasoning, salt is a meat by meat deal never just blindly salt. The next issue I had was the manager came out and almost made it seem like we were faking our problems, I had 4 bites of my food and couldn't force anymore down it was that bad, the other thing stated by the manager was there is no salt in the kitchen at all, which is laughable, overall I might wait and see if they have a better night down the road but if anything the manager drove me away today being as defensive as she was, accepting criticism and learning from it is critical to anything you do just a...
