Great donuts, terrible service and dishonest/evasive business practices. We were initially enthusiastic about supporting a small business with a big catering order but, echoing a number of reviews here about their lack of service, unfortunately they seem to want to take advantage of that and treat their customers poorly.
We worked extensively ahead of time with Hangry Donut Bar to schedule a bulk order of donuts and coffee for ~120 people for the Sunday morning brunch of our wedding weekend in August 2024. Over $1K purchase value. In the months leading up to our event, Erica’s response times over email were a bit flakey but not horrible, and she was overall pretty friendly. Donuts looked good.
Obviously, a wedding event is a formal affair with firm expectations around the food arriving on time and as expected. We were very clear on this and gave exact time expectations (9:30am delivery for an event scheduled for 10-11:30am), contact numbers, and the address of our venue. On the morning of the Sunday event, Ed texted us to tell us he’d be 30 minutes late. Those 30 minutes came and went with no update. I had to repeatedly call Ed as he gave no real explanation or apology and as all our guests arrived and stood around with nothing to eat or drink. He eventually showed up around 10:45am, 75 minutes late to the event with only 45 minutes left. Still no real apology or explanation. At that point many of our guests had just hit the road without any food or coffee.
We didn’t harp on it in the moment since we wanted to put it aside and enjoy the rest of our wedding weekend. But after the day-of, radio silence from Hangry Donut Bar on all fronts. No proactive apology, no response to our many emails or calls - clearly just trying to avoid any/all accountability. When we finally did reach Erica over the phone, she said she had been “out of office” for weeks. She then proceeded to explain that, because the donuts were eventually delivered, and only late due to “circumstances out of their control” (on which she would not elaborate), somehow they had fulfilled their end of the agreement, with no recognition of the literal line in their contract “5. Delivery. Time is of the essence in the performance of this Contract. Hangry The Donut Bar will deliver goods between the hours of 9:30am-10:00am.” We had asked for a partial refund reflecting that we had about four dozen donuts left over, because so many guests did not get anything to eat before they left. She offered store credit, which we would never use, but held firm that they don’t offer partial or any refunds.
At the end of the day, the donuts themselves were high quality. Maybe Hangry Donut Bar could be depended on for a zero-commitment drop-in to grab a donut and coffee in their brick and mortar store. But I would absolutely not recommend any kind of catering agreement with this business given the lack of professionalism, unreliability and unwillingness to take...
Read moreThe only reason they have one star is because the donuts are so incredibly good. However these people do not know how to run a business: the first time I ordered from a pop up, they were over an hour late for the scheduled pickup, and did not apologize. The second time my friends and I started driving to st Albans for a pop up, it was cancelled after the event was supposed to start. Since getting their storefront their hours have changed day by day, with last minute closings and no consistency whatsoever. My hope is that they will hire a person with business experience to run the business side of the company, because they do not know how to run a sustainable operation. It’s quite disappointing considering their donuts are so good. They’ve even resulted to turning off comments on their Instagram because they don’t want to take accountability or apologize to...
Read moreWhile I will absolutely recommend getting to the shop first thing in the morning to make sure you get your choice give this place a 10/10. My boyfriend and I frequent this place about every other weekend. Their vanilla bean glaze is an instant classic, the maple bacon one they occasionally have is to die for. Their chocolate glaze is a rich ganache sort and their strive for fresh and quality ingredients can be tasted in every bite. My boyfriend and I will leave with six donuts for around $27 but we never feel slighted or at a loss because the experience is worth it. If you want to taste passion please do go to this establishment. The couple, Erica and Ed, are an absolute delight to converse with. Their dedication to making an excellent...
