To have this establishment in the Saint Paul neighborhood is definitely a blessing because I doubt that there is another one like such within geographical proximity. It is a plus that Abogado's is Latinx owned and (partially) women owned. I managed to have a conversation with Inti when I was there, and asked him about his background and experience of being a lawyer and a coffee shop owner. It would have been nice to meet Ofelia as well but she was somewhere else during that time. I loved everything about the decor and the atmosphere. I also loved the presentation of the drinks that my partner and I had gotten: the Chocolate Mexicano and the Summery Judgment. The Summery Judgment took a bit of time to get used to, as upon first tasting it I was a bit skeptical of the botanical tonic water and espresso combination, but eventually I learned to like it and it turned out fine! The Chocolate Mexicano was so well-decorated, that unfortunately to me, the flavor did not live up to its appearance or its price of $10. The natural sweetness from the chocolate was relatively weak, which I thought might have been a lack of balance between the sugar content in the chocolate and added sugar (if there was any). When I was tasting it, I was trying to compare it to Ibarra or Abuelita, and I knew that added cane sugar would help elevate the sweetness from the chocolate as well. Regardless, with all that said, I would love to return in the future and try more of their drinks and even pastries! This was a pleasant experience learning about a small business like such that was personally relatable, and I look forward to seeing this coffee shop continue to flourish. I understand that my 4-star review is based on a very limited choice of items and that this café will probably have many items that are just amazing, so I would love to return and try more of their options and even provide an...
Read moreAn unapologetically singular coffee shop. Abogados Café breathes passion into their law-meets-Latin America café project and invariably the results are an offering with real vision, a representative product, a very knowledgeable (and always friendly) staff and thoroughly professional excellence. They let their quality Latin regional coffees do the talking, which allows for powerful thematic expression in a market that needs change badly.
Anyone can copy the Italian-meets-American model, roast dark espresso, and put up mahogany baseboard. In the Twin Cities you will find hundreds of shops on the spectrum of “up-north” to “sleek modern,” none with a real stake in making self-definition a priority. Their value is the same as the self-service machine in a gas station. They offer with their coffee a forgettable “refill” of cultural apathy and nothing more. When homogenized (and gentrified), the “artisans” of third-wave coffee are just as artless as the coffee-chains of the second wave.
Luckily for Como Park, owners Ofelia & Inti either recognized (and rejected) this glaringly faceless vision or have ignored it completely. Abogados’ unrivaled strength is the ability to project vitality into their café by focusing on radical continuity of a specialized product (the coffee itself) and allowing it to exist in a space refreshingly devoid of third-wave coffee-industry posturing. This profoundly bold claim is worth it’s...
Read moreMy favorite neighborhood coffee shop! I love their unique seasonal lattes & the space is gorgeous. I see some folks balking at the prices in a handful of reviews. Abogados uses eco-conscious, fair trade, locally roasted coffee beans – keep in mind that coffee bean prices hit a record high this year. They get their milk (which costs about $12/gallon) from a local farm, their straws & cups are compostable, & their flavorings are likely made from scratch. Their prices reflect the quality of their ingredients (see their website for a more in-depth explanation.) Can most people afford a $7-11 latte every day? Probably not. For that reason, Abogados is a once in a while treat for me, & it feels all the more special knowing they use great local ingredients. I'd rather pay a few extra dollars to support my neighborhood coffee shop & keep wealth in my community than go to Starbucks any...
