Cold Front — Restaurant in Saint Paul

I promised an honest review of The Slider, so here we are:

My first visit to Cold Front was based entirely around the hype of their custom flavor creations. I tried two, and settled on "This $π¡€'s About to Get Real" for my Slider, which is advertised as a sweet roll with Nutella, panini-pressed with Oreo cookies and your choice of ice cream.

When it was ready, I was handed a paper serving boat with what appeared to be, for all intents and purposes, a patty melt. I must have looked truly confused, because they were nice enough to ask if everything was to my liking. I stammered about how I didn't see any ice cream, but they assured me, "It's in there." I took a tentative first bite, which reminded me of beignets and hazelnut pastries, but didn't get much ice cream. Then I got reckless.

Y'ALL. THIS IS NOT AN ICE CREAM SANDWICH.

This is the Juicy Lucy of ice cream sandwiches. When I tell you to learn from my mistakes, and eat around the edges, I am trying to help. Because I took an enormous bite and it exploded like an overstuffed jelly donut.

I will be getting another (and another!) Cold Front specialty Slider, maybe with their Black Cherry ice cream, or without the Oreos, if I'm not feeling chocolate. I'm a heavy coffee drinker, so too much sweetness isn't right for me, and I'm happy they allow for substitutions.

I'm almost sorry I didn't share the experience with my husband. Almost.

The point I'm trying to make is that they've stumbled upon a really nifty dessert creation and everyone needs one in their face.

Ordered curbside online, and arrived at the quoted time for pickup. When we called the line, the guy said they hadn't gotten it packaged because it was busy, and they were out of 2 of our 3 flavors. That's fine, I get it, website is behind the real service, so no big deal. The guy on the line sold us 2 replacement flavors, and we accepted. He said it might be a minute because they're busy. That's fine, but I can clearly see 2 people inside not fully engaged in their work. Minor frustration.

15 minutes later, after watching other patrons come and go, I come inside, because there has been no indication of progress to find out what is happening. The guy (same as on the phone) say he got 2 of the flavors packages, but sold the third while we were waiting for ours. How did you sell the ice cream to someone else after selling it to us? And how long were you planning on letting us sit at the curb before you told us?

Oh my gosh you MUST come to Cold Front if you are in St. Paul!! Located right next to the legendary NOOK burger joint, this place offers some of the most unique ice cream flavors we’ve tried. We get ice cream almost once a week so we can post on our Instagram that features places to eat around the area. After trying all the most famous ice cream joints, we still say this one was on our top 3! With flavors like Lemon Poppyseed and This $&@! Got Serious (award winning, smooth salted caramel with sea salt fudge and salted cashews) I would sample as many as you can, but the best part is that they offer ice cream flights! SO YOU CAN! I cannot wait to come back here to try more flavors, considering this place always crosses my mind when I ask “where should we go next”. You MUST stop here!
