My husband and I finally had dinner here last Saturday night after driving by for years! It's exactly what I thought - a quaint, no-frills New England gem with fantastic food and even better service. Kim (she introduced herself) was our waitress and she was attentive, bubbly and made sure our order was exactly what we wanted. She actually dropped off two just-out-of-the-oven rolls within two minutes of us being seated. Kim was so good that when she brought my steak over the first thing she said was, "ok first things first - let's cut that Larry open and see if it's done to your liking". Never has a waitress done that before! They typically drop your food off and leave, then never check back to see that your meat was as ordered. By the way, the meat was done perfectly.
We ordered drinks and an app - lobster stuffed mushrooms. My amaretto sour was large and my husband's beer nice 'n cold. So far, so good. The app was a smokin hot casserole dish filled with mushrooms and lobster chunks topped with a delicious buttery garlicy crumb mixture and then broiled cheese. YUM! I ordered surf & turf - 10 oz steak and baked stuffed shrimp (comes with two sides - I got salad & sweet potato fries). Steak prepared simply with salt and pepper and grilled to perfection. Shrimp was tender and again with the buttery crumb mixture. Salad was fresh and cold and not tiny. Sweet potato fries were nothing to write home about, but hey ... standard fries are good and they filled the hungry hole. My husband ordered the cajun shrimp and scallops over linguini (also came with a salad). He slurped up every last bite.
It's been a LONG time since we've been out to eat and every bit of the meal was delicious AND the waitress totally earned every penny of her tip. It's clear she takes pride in her job. We will definitely be back. Going to try the burger next time and we will bring our daughter who is a French onion soup connoisseur....
Read moreStopped here once before during the pandemic, because we were able to eat outside. Couldn’t remember if we liked the meal, so we tried it again. Took forever to get our food, but we weren’t starving, so it was OK. I will say that, as we were walking in, two people walked out, and they both smiled and said to us that it was worth the wait! I’ve never had somebody give me a stellar review of a restaurant on their way out. So that was a really good sign! I ordered the beet Gorgonzola salad and was deeply disappointed. There were pieces of older, yucky greens mixed in, and the beets were way too plentiful and overpowered the salad. Usually when you get a beet and Gorgonzola salad, they are roasted beets. These were pickled beets from a commercial can. They didn’t rinse them, they didn’t even remove the cloves, because sadly as I was eating the salad I got a mouthful of cloves. That hurt! I didn’t even eat a quarter of the salad before I pushed it away. $14 wasted My partner got the veal Parmesan. Part of it was burned, most of the veal was chewy, and only the center was edible. The mashed potatoes on my sons stuffed chicken had no flavor at all. He said they were highly processed. The green beans looked fresh and crispy , the other member of our party had baked haddock au gratin. It was a lot of cheese and potato and she didn’t even eat half of it. So overall, this is a great restaurant for people who aren’t used to eating health conscious- freshly made ingredients. if you are a smoker or former smoker, probably better. You wouldn’t be too critical. I think the atmosphere is nice and comfortable and the staff are wonderful. I would call it a...
Read moreFOOD POISONING: My husband, son and myself ate at the hungry traveler on 9/9/22. My husband and son ate the chicken alfredo and I ate the chicken parm. Following our meals my husband became violently ill, and then my son became ill, and myself later that night. I called the restaurant to make them aware and was told to call back the next morning. My husband’s symptoms got worse within the next couple of hours and I called 911 for guidance. I was told by dispatch due to the severity of his symptoms they were sending an ambulance and paramedics. My husband was transported to the hospital by ambulance and was given an IV, fluids and they took blood work. The hospital confirmed food poisoning and dehydration. I called the Hungry Traveler on 9/10/22 and asked to speak to Debbie as I was instructed to do so from the previous night. I was told Debbie was not there yet and she would call back. Debbie called me back on 9/10/22 at 1:29 pm and I made her aware of the situation. I told her I can provide documentation of confirmed food poisoning and the ambulance and hospital bills. She told me she wanted a “doctor’s note” from my husband’s doctor confirming he ate at the Hungry Traveler and what he ate, despite her saying she already confirmed our order with our bill she looked up. She stated to me “it seems like you are calling with a purpose and want a free meal” and also “I am not worried about it, I will submit this to my insurance company”. She was cold and not sympathetic to us all getting sick from eating at her restaurant. We are taking further action steps. Just be aware of this place, how they operate and how they treat...
