"BEST TORTILLAS IN SAN ANTONIO!"... there, I said it, convince me otherwise. . At least in the two years I've been here.🤷♂️ So fluffy, light, and thick without being too doughy..really good! Now on to the SUPER FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE... I love being at places where Ifeel like I'm the only one who's not a regular. I mean this place is like the San Antonio version of the show Cheers, everybody knew everyone's name, and if they didn't, they were going to when they left. That being said, my waitress never came back to my table 😅 but to be honest, Iwas fine with the huge glass of water I ordered, I was set. They have a great menu with everyone's favorites, and I was extremely pleased to find another place offering Puerco en Salsa Roja on the menu! It was tasty and made even better when using the flour tortillas to sop up the sauce! They offer FREE CHIPS N TASTY SALA and everything is served on scorching hot plates which keeps your food hot and enjoyable. Unfortunately, for me, the rice was just not tasty at all, and the beans kinda blah. It's only the 2nd time I wasn't able to eat Mexican rice (the other at Henry's PT). Hopefully, it was just an off day. The enchiladas were on point though, and so I had plenty to eat! Ultra cheesy with a great sauce. All in all I will gladly forgive the rice to come back to this hidden gem that caught my eye while driving down Nacogdoches. Very glad I stopped in! I'll be even happier...
Read moreEdit 3/3/23 My co-workers and I are regulars now. Lunch specials are $8.50 including tea. Portions are generous and food is really good. Salsas are on point. Chips are fresh. Our office moved farther away and we still make the trip weekly. Highly recommend.
Original review:
The food is generally quite good, cheap, and served generously. Our group tried enchiladas, Puerco en chili rojo, gorditas, and carne a la mexicana. The tortillas are handmade and fresh. Salsa is good and they have the traditional trio of red, brown, and green. Free chips and red salsa. Service is fast.
The downside is that it is very crowded. Your chair may be touching someone else's from another table. It's crowded even by pre-COVID standards. Fidelo's is also loud. Remove the crying baby and tone down the mariachis (mediocre) and it would still be crowded enough to be loud. This is probably a solid place for pick up, maybe to dine in early, before the crowd.
Warning: They don't understand what puffy tacos are. Do not order them here.
Edit 3/29/22: I've been back several times now with guys from my office. I have not encountered mariachis, again. It doesn't seem as crowded or as loud as it has been. Added...
Read moreI've been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and have always had a great experience. Typically, the service is outstanding: the staff is friendly, cheerful, and welcoming. Whenever I visit Texas from DC, I look forward to having their delicious tacos. However, today was different.
After the woman at the counter finished assisting a white customer and laughing with him, she ignored me completely. When another customer walked in behind me, she greeted them warmly while continuing to disregard me. She avoided eye contact, looked at her phone, and acted as if I wasn't there.
Fortunately, another staff member, who was very friendly and customer-focused, approached me and took my order. He handled everything professionally. The woman who processed my payment was also very pleasant, and my tacos were ready quickly.
As the only Black person in the restaurant at the time, it felt as though the initial staff member's behavior was intentional and discriminatory. This kind of service is unacceptable, and such behavior is inappropriate for anyone working in customer service. She...
