I didn’t know what to expect when going to Hash having heard great things from the vegan community, but as a fellow vegan myself I know there can be a lot of brand loyalty of wanting a place to succeed just because it’s vegan. I know that sometimes they can gloss over some flaws because a place is vegan.
I have to say that I now believe the hype of what amazing service and food Hash brings to San Antonio. It’s carved out such a niche brand of being sober and vegan, two things that are actually very “counter” to the culture here.
I had the Fish Tacos actually made into a wrap and it was amazing. The green spinach wrap was neatly rolled over some white rice, tasty peppers and vegan fish. The DRESSING on it was beyond tasty.
My partner had the Moons Over My Hammy Sandwich which was also very tasty. A nice breakfast sandwich, very classic with vegan ham, egg and hash brown. While it could have maybe used a small side like the chips that came with the wrap it was cut at a diagonal so me and my partner shared our wrap and sandwich.
We also had chili cheese tots to share as a special and they were probably the least favorite thing we had but still a pretty tasty with tots, chili, cheese and a generous drizzle of delicious sour cream and the scallions were a very nice touch. It’s still a great plate to share, I just wish the chili had a bit more flavor.
It was quite bold to go on our anniversary, my partner and I but that’s when the owner emerged and thanked us for stopping by, wished us a happy anniversary and offered us some tasty vegan desserts on the house.
After some good mocktails and food this was a beyond kind gesture and I will definitely be back. I hope you too give into the hype you might hear from your vegan friend or individual who tells you about this place and go find out how great it is for yourself.
PS. The Irish coffee tasted DELICIOUS. If you’re a coffee and whiskey drinker taste theirs. I would easily go back just for a drink, but will probably always get a bite of food...
Read moreVegan café with a down-home, friendly vibe, Hash has become a San Antonio DIY institution. The art and coziness of the inside suggests the vegan restaurant has been around for a while — there’s a free community art library as well as a table set up with a local mainstay paper crafter who sells handmade greeting cards.
But let’s get down to it, the real reason to visit Hash is for their Mac and Cheese. I’ve had friends tell me to order other things, and I have. Pretty much everything on their menu is great, and full disclosure: I’m not a vegan. Their food is filling and worth the price in my opinion especially since you can’t really get this assortment of food and CBD goods in many places in San Antonio.
When it comes to my favorites, the Buffalo Chik’n always hits. So much so that I have tried to replicate the recipe and it’s never quite the same. Something about eating it on Hash’s porch in their perfect ceramic bowls just can’t be replicated. Love it.
The restaurant also acts as a community space for poetry nights, punk concerts, recovery meetings, harm reduction information, and even hosts a resident cat outside named Smokey who provides great company.
With as busy as it can get sometimes, I do wish they could expand their space. It would be great to have more access to bathrooms, but that’s a problem at almost every local spot in town that utilizes an already-established space. Hash is also green plant friendly, and that’s suggested in their name. But it’s also one of the few non-alcoholic places in town. As someone who isn’t sober but very much seeks to cut down their alcohol intake — Hash’s ban on alcohol is much appreciated.
Hash Vegan Eatery’s commitment to community shows in their presence and their actions and is a blueprint on how many local businesses could function. Hopefully this business thrives for many...
Read moreIn the more than 2 years I’ve been going to HASH, I can’t believe I’ve never left an official review. A veteran of the restaurant and hospitality industry myself, I’ve worked in countless fine dining establishments, and notably at 3 different 3 Michelin starred restaurants. I can easily say that HASH is the most consistently delicious food I’ve ever had, and I’ve worked and dined a plenty in Boston, NYC, the Bay Area and Napa Valley. The only other restaurant I can say holds a candle to the consistency and quality of taste to HASH is Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro in Yountville, where I used to dine very regularly when I lived in Napa.
I’ve brought family and friends to HASH, and each time, every one of them has been blown away – and my guests are never vegan, and had never had exposure to vegan food much if at all, before trying HASH.
My personal favorite are the Phish Tacos. Do not sleep on these!!! Runner up are the Potato & Egg tacos. This week they had throwback Frito Pie, and it blew us away. HASH is a safe space for anyone in recovery, and their mocktails are out of this world good. Again, this coming from a very experienced palate (and certified Sommelier). Sometimes I even get one to go!
If the Southside seems like a far drive, take it from this very experienced diner – it’s worth it. When I fly in to visit, I literally go straight from the airport to HASH almost every time. Do yourself the favor, you’ll be so...
