Felix's BBQ with Soul — Restaurant in San Marcos

I am baffled as to why this place has such good reviews, so maybe I ordered on a bad night. I ordered a bbq sampler with brisket, tri-tip, rib ends, and fried chicken. I also got an extra side of ribs. For sides I had beans, coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies, and mac and cheese. Let me tell you what was good. The fried chicken has a very unique flavor and was delicious. I've never had fried chicken that tasted like that... It was good and unique, but not to die for. The hush puppies were OK and the beans were OK, oh and the mac and cheese was OK...I mean, fried cornbread is hard to screw up and the beans were fully cooked to softness and covered in a sugary sauce. The mac and cheese was cheesy. Here's what was lame: everything else. The coleslaw was literally shredded cabbage and no sauce no carrots nothing...just plain plain plain cabbage (it should not even be called coleslaw, it should be called raw shredded cabbage). The ribs were not tender, they stuck to the bone and in between the teeth and were not cooked properly. The flavor of the sauce on the ribs was barely there. Picture cooking meat at too high of a temperature with no seasoning and then afterward adding a miniscule amount of bad bbq sauce. That's the ribs. Then the brisket and the tri-tip...you can't tell them apart actually. I'm not sure I got both or just a double serving of one. The beef was tender, but massive amounts of pure fat. Not fat marbled in the meat, just fat. Again, no smoky flavor, no flavor at all, just what was accomplished by a small amount of crap bbq sauce added after the fact. The rib ends were soaked in massive sauce, but the sauce is not good, just mediocre. The rib ends were also mostly bone and fat and cartilage. Poor meat quality, no smoke flavor, not cooked correctly, not seasoned, wow so bad! Never again. Also the potato salad is terrible, it has undercooked potatoes with an overly mustardy sauce and otherwise...

Love Felix ! but may not come back to this location . I order from Felix for my family all the time for holidays and for causal dine outs but for some reason this location just can’t seem to get it right Each time I’ve order from this location something is wrong and I’m being charged for the extra for what I’m requesting for example the Alabama fried chicken I paid +$1.00-$2 extra for dark meat just to have two breast and two wings in the bag ! Then I always order the catfish nuggets each time I order it I specifically ask in the comments to have at least (2 ) tartar sauces per order ( i love it so much I place a least 3 orders ) . I’m always prepared for the staffs excuse for why they can’t give me more condiments but this recent time I was yelled out and told I would have to pay for any additional condiments that I wanted as they could only give me one condiment for two orders of food ?! I don’t mind paying additional if they would make that clear in their pricing if that’s the case but I do feel as much that is spent for the purchase the order should at least come with a minimum (2 ) condiments per order ! But I’ll make this my last and final comment on this location . I hate that it’s a slightly negative one but this was the last straw for me unfortunately. I left a review with the 3rd party company I ordered the food from but doubt if I’ll hear anything back just want others to be forewarned . ( update * - restaurant responds to post with just I’m sorry that was your experience * shrugs yes I’m sorry I spent my money here truly dissatisfying please don’t waste...

Came here on a whim the other day because my son and I felt like trying something different. We went for the $12 daily lunch special they have until 4pm. As soon as we entered, we were greeted with warm welcomes from the staff which immediately made me feel comfortable enough to stay. We got the barbecue chicken plate. My son and I loved the fries. It was perfectly crispy and excellent. The cornbread was great, especially with butter! The barbecue chicken was amazing!! Our waitress, Trillane, was a star waiter, especially for my son who has autism. She was patient with him, which was sooo appreciated for our first visit!! Today, we came again because I asked my son what he wanted to eat while I was out doing errands and he mentioned “crispy french fries”l (usually, he says McDonald’s french fries!) and he included “the one from Felix’s barbecue!” My son is obsessed with the fries! This time we ordered the rib steak tips and it was amazing-amazing-amazing amazing!!! what a steal of a deal!! We will come back and next time I’ll bring my husband and other sons, too! I know they will love it as much as we do!! Trillane was our waiter again today, and she did it again as a star waiter! Her beautiful daughter was also working at the same time - they are such beautiful sweet ladies!! Thank you Felix’s BBQ and staff for amazing...
