America's House — Restaurant in San Mateo

I'm really torn with this place. Two stars is my lowest review, but I guess it had to come some time. I had some good food and I'm sure some people really enjoy this place and who knows, it might be the place for you.

Came in and were seated quickly, but when we ordered our food it took over 30 minutes for our food to come. Had to wave down waitress for water/chip refills, which we needed because of the long wait. They have wine, but no wine list or any idea of the names of specific wines (once again, this place might not be for you if you expected that they had a list).

I ordered the pupusa plate because that is what they are known for. It was good, but they also gave me some salad on the side in a tupperware (!?!?!?) and some tongs, I suppose this has been given to previous customers? Also, some salsa in a small-cup sized container and a spoon, was this also used with previous customers?

This place has a ton of quirks and that's putting it nicely, but if none of this stuff bothers you, go for it! The food is good and priced okay. I'm glad to have somewhere to compare pupusas to, but this place...

Worse experience ever. I ordered two pupusas with beans cheese and loroco. They finally come out after waiting for 20 minutes. I had a nice cold draft Heineken while I was waiting so I wasn’t trippin. My pupusas finally arrive and after eating half of the first one I notice there are no beans. So then I open up the second one and notice there isn’t any in there either. We call over the owner and he takes the plate, returns less than a minute later and tells me that there is beans inside 🤔 I look and I see a small amount of beans in it. Like the size of a quarter . It took me a while to wonder how he found those beans. He obviously dug into it and found it then brings the plate back to me and shows me . I left the plate alone and didn’t touch it. My family and I went to visit today. It was a very unpleasant experience. I ordered a Molcajete, 1 horchara and pupusas, also 2 coffees. My food was late, the order came in huge pauses... I got the molcajete with no side orders, these came 20 mins late and they were brought by the chef. The last thing that came were my tortillas, after I asked the server 4 times about my tortillas, they came with hairs (extremely disgusting experience). We kept on asking the server for our coffees and they could never make it to the table.
