So back in the day there was a barber shop right next to the saugus cafe that has long since been absorbed by the restaurant now being the 'front parlor' or 'waiting area' and this is where the California lottery machine is too.....(The ticket that should have been mine was actually number 11) This afternoon i was there sitting in a chair next to the lottery machine where i was playing a particular ten dollar scratcher and since i kept losing on this game called 'multiplier craze'....I lost $210 in a row on this game so i was continuing playing knowing eventually i would win what with that many losers , win a decent amount of money for sure..... Out of no where one of the employees that works here shows up at the lottery machine and me so I say to him to go ahead and get his tickets or whatever , but to not play the particular game I was playing because I am so to win .....so this guy just says okay and puts his money in the machine and buys my winnings ticket of the same scratcher I was playing thus stealing what was supposed to be for me.... With a sheepish look he quickly walked away knowing he robbed me and then I believe that I am entitled to both scratchers numbered 18 and 8 of the 'multiplier craze' ten dollar tickets that were both winners with me having to pay the cost of the tickets only that or be reimbursed for the entire amount of my very hard earned money that i had invested , only to be so blatantly and rudely treated and stolen from as if I deserved it or something worse... So I am expecting whoever is in charge to fix this matter appropriately since I did nothing wrong and was minding my own business and being a responsible gambler, where as this employee of the restaurant was not responsible or respectful instead making me a victim when and where I should not have been and that is right there at the saugus cafe where I am a loyal customer , not to mention me being kovid Chad who save everyone from the now once deadly coronavirus and this is the kind of treatment is unacceptable and...
Read morethis place has been on my list for a long time, and also it's on my list of oldest restaurants in LA to go to so I was happy to find out that I was near there ... it was nighttime when I arrived and there we're more staff than customers.
I asked what the special was, what the really good food was to eat there. The waitress said that they're really known best for their breakfast and that the place was packed all morning long. Nonetheless she gave me a number of things that were...like all those foods that Swanson frozen dinners were trying to emulate, when they were trying to provide a simulacra of great homemade cooking, Salisbury steak London broil open-faced turkey sandwich...(I was originally planning to get a burger and they had burgers but it wasn't really a burger place.)
I decided to go with the enthusiastic recommendation of another waitress that I try the open face sandwich and it was magnificent. it reminded me of all those restaurants like the Tallyrand who try to sell home cooking but don't really quite pull it off, this place feels like my grandmother or some super competition version of my grandmother was in the kitchen cooking these brilliant dishes, things I normally wouldn't ask for but we're delighted to eat because they were delicious. I also had the ham and navy bean soup which was terrific.
the service was outstanding, the congeniality of the patrons was great, and it really felt like a place that was welcoming and homelike, which so many places try to pull off and fail. It's a place remarkable for achieving the goal of actually having home cooking in a restaurant. I can recommend this place enthusiastically, and can't wait to come back...
Read moreWe went to Saugus Cafe yesterday and ordered the blueberry pancakes. The waitress brought them to the table and they were not fully cooked. There was a lot of liquid pancake mix in the middle of the pancake. We brought it to the waitresses attention and so she sent them back and had the cook remake them. When she brought them the second time they were burnt on the side that was facing down. I could smell a burnt smell as she set them in the table. We called her over and showed her. She then took her finger and stuck in the middle of the pancake and was saying that it was because they used frozen blueberries. These pancakes were not editable unless you like burnt pancakes. I surely don’t! She then brought the bill and mentioned that she gave us a 25 score card discount on it. We felt that we shouldn’t have had to pay for them at all since neither batches were edible. She said that she can not give them free to us even though we couldn’t eat them. She said that if we sent them back once they would be free but since they were sent back twice that she could only give us 25 score card discount on them. How does that make sense?? We couldn’t eat either of them since neither were cooked correctly. With that being said, I will never go back there. I have been a customer for over 45 years and this was just poor service all around. I do not...
