In my 30 years of golfing by far the worst experience at a course. The greens were sad but not the part that ticked us off. Our group had 12 golfers, 3 groups of four. I was in the middle group. We get ready to tee off on 11 and this guy "the marshall" is driving down the middle of our fairway, so we we obviously had to wait to tee off. He stops beside the tee box and says "boys, we have a problem, you have been on the course for 2 hours and 23 minutes and it is totally unacceptable". When I told him that we have not pushed up on the team in front of us and the team behind us was still in the middle of their fairway hitting to the pin when we were attemtping to tee off. He said we were going to have to speed up play. He, in our opinion was rude and condescending during the conversation, not to mention I am a 58 YO and not a boy. What we did not tell him, because we did not want to continue to apparently back up the course. The problem was that on the 9th hole their was a fundraiser where we were told about the reason for it and of course we had to dig to get to our wallets, not to mention that one of our golfers in the group just ahead of us hit it to within 2 ft of the pin, so the guy gave us the details on the shot to include that he got the birdie. We also had a chat about our groups get together. And he congratulated us. He was a nice guy but it cost us about 15-20 minutes of golf time. Then we get to hole 10. Granted the 9th did not end near the clubhouse for real food but there was the cart lady. The food cart was very low stocked but that was not the issue. The issue was that we were at that hole for a while as the nice food cart lady was telling us places in town to eat and giving us great details on things to do and directions. When we left that hole my partner said that she was nice but a "chatty Kathy", in hind sight, I assume we should have been rude and cut off our about 15 minute conversation. The group behind us did catch up but we parred out the hole and went to next hole when we were rudely interrupted by the Marshall. We then started to rush and lost concentration. The direction to "hurry up" not only effected my game but the others in our group. We were on next hole when the members in the group behind us caught up to us and asked if the marshal spoke to us. We all were so pissed that we did decided to stop golfing and pack it in. Each of our 3 groups had the same "course management" delays. Also, we noted that when we skipped the rest of the holes we did not see a back up of golfers as the marshall had detailed. So if you want to play a nice relaxing game of golf in Savanah on a nice course, do not play...
Read moreWhat an evolution Bacon Park Golf Course has had. O. C. Welch has saved a Savannah treasure. This course is such a big part of Savannah’s golfing past. I remember it when I was a little girl hanging out on the weekend with my daddy, Peyton Smith, and all of his crew. He and Jack Fitzgerald and many others practically lived there. They were just beginning their local golf careers and having a ball. As time went on and as their love of the game grew they moved on to the private club scene. My father always enjoyed returning to Bacon Park to play. It was like coming home. I am so thankful that OC Welch has taken Bacon Park ( as well as other local courses) and restored them to their original glory and then some. My father would be so unbelievably proud. Golf meant the world to him and his pal, Jack, as well as many others they routinely played with. Personally, It means the world to me because my father walked those fairways and greens. That was where he was the happiest. Laughing, drinking, cutting up with friends, talking about women, gambling and letting his little daughter drive the cart was where he wanted to be the most. To me, that course as well as a couple others in town are sacred ground to me. Mr. Welch has made it possible for this course to be loved by many others. It’s beautiful, well maintained, well staffed and most of all, loved. Peyton Smith, my beloved daddy, a phenomenal golfer in his day, is there as well as many others from the past. THAT IS SPECIAL. Savannah golfers are very...
Read moreHave played here many times. Notoriously ill maintained. A couple weeks ago we got here early to use the range before our tee time and it was closed for no apparent reason. Last Friday at around 2 or 3 me and my brother went to use the range and they “had no balls” and today after the rain from yesterday has fully dried up and I could roll around in a field without getting damp, they told me the range is closed yet again and referenced a “puddle” that is actually a 10ft hole to the right of the range that probably takes a week to dry up. The fact is they don’t put any money into this course. The greens are atrocious. They shut down the range when they don’t feel like running the picker. They will split up your group of five that booked two separate tee times and paid double what the course is worth, even with no other souls out playing that day. They don’t have nice amenities, good food, or cart girls, but they do have greenskeepers that will make you wait on holes while they do God knows what, considering the course usually looks abandoned. Last time we played 18 here one of our carts died and the facilities people wouldn’t call the clubhouse to bring us a new one, instead they just showed us how to put it in neutral so we could push it with our other cart the remainder of the time (5 or 6 holes left). The drive to Black Creek in Ellabel is well worth it, I wouldn’t return here until they show some care about...
