Went to La Fonda Del Sol for the first time with our Taco Tuesday group of 10 people. We try New Mexican restaurants every week. We all agreed that La Fonda Del Sol is a good choice. Good. Not great; based on our overall ratings on food quality, atmosphere, service and price.
We would give it 2 stars but have moved it to 3 stars based on the great service.
Our comments Margaritas are good. But small for $8 (which is the HH price). $11 is the normal price. I would never pay $11 for that margarita and some of us opted for beer instead. Ala carte Tacos are $7 but $5 at Happy hour. A bit on the pricy side.
Chips and salsa are a bit boring. Not much flavor or seasoning in either. Not recommended even though they are complimentary.
The fajitas were excellent. Great char on the meat and vegetables. Excellent seasoning. $4 off at Happy hour so the price was reasonable and easily shareable by 2.
The queso was served with fried flour tortillas. The queso dip had a good flavor, but was runny (not thick). The flour tortilla’s were under fried and a bit soggy - which was a shame as they were so much better than the corn chips they serve.
The taco salad was okay. Not great. The chimichangas was quite large.
Service was very good. Our waiter was quiet, but efficient in serving us as a large group. He did an excellent job.
We think La Fonda Del Sol is an okay choice for lunch or happy hour. Pricey on the normal dinner menu.
We would only come here for happy hour or lunch prices. The happy hour is not that great of a savings and is from 3-5pm so it ends early - which means an early start.
Given the abundance of great Mexican restaurants in the Phoenix area, La Fonda Del Sol would not be our first recommendation or a location we would return to anytime soon.
Overall nice atmosphere but a bit boring and sedated. Feels more like the Italian restaurant it used to be than a fun Mexican vibe. But all in all, it was very nice.
We think our group made the place far more lively than normal!
Overall, we feel this is a middle of the road restaurant with some really good dishes (like the fajitas) and a number of mediocre meals - all that run at a pretty high price - even at happy hour.
2 HH beers. 2 HH margaritas One dish of beef/chicken fajitas shared With Tip this was $62 at happy hour prices.
Others that didn’t share their meals easily spent $78+ for 2 people with tip at happy hour.
Compared to many other places we have gone, La Fonda Del Sol is on the high side of the cost spectrum.
Our experience shows there are many other restaurants to choose that provide a better value and quality. And while not wanting to be mean, this is not a restaurant you go to for any sort of fun. Its a very...
Read moreWhile the food was pretty good, the service was awful. My friend and I went there late on a Friday for dinner and we weren't greeted by a "host" for at least 10 minutes. The woman who greeted us was less than friendly and had a hard time hearing the name we put down on the waiting list.
Once we were rushed to our seats, we gave our drink order to our waitress and were served warm chips and salsa -- it was really good. At that point, things were looking up! About 10 minutes after getting our drinks we were asked if we were ready to order. We began to order, but hesitated a little bit out of uncertainty on our choices. The moment the phrase "ummmm" left my mouth, our waitress shouted "Come on, come on, hurry! I have other things to do." After being completely disgusted by that comment, we sent her on her way to serve other guests who we could only assume were "regulars" given the attention and attitude our waitress gave them.
Finally, we ordered our food and it seemed she had a change of heart or realized she was being cranky. She gave us recommendations on food choices and we were on our way to not having to deal with her anymore. I ended up ordering the Chimichanga and my friend ordered the Enchiladas.
Shortly thereafter, we received our food. My plate was scorching hot as if the food was placed on the plate, then the plate on the Sun to cook the food. All in all, the food was good and there was plenty of it. I would NOT return based on the service received though. They need a dedicated host to take names and should probably work on their server to customer ratio so their wait staff isn't rushing their (new) customers.
One last gripe: they really need to clean their decorations. We sat next to some sort of chili pepper wall decoration and it had 4 inches of dust hanging from it. Thankfully it wasn't immediately over the table, but come on! When the front of house is that dirty, it makes you wonder what's going on in the kitchen. ...
Read moreFrom the second we walked into La Fonda, the waiter was so rude & unfriendly that I was taken aback! Throughout our whole meal, he acted as though we were a total bother to him. We were there today, a Saturday, with our monthly Mexican foodie group at 11:00am. We noticed that we didn’t get any chips & salsa. When we asked a different waiter about the chips & were informed that they ‘didn’t have any chips right now.’ The 2nd waiter offered to bring us salsa (but no chips). We were confused about what we were supposed to do with the salsa only??? He then said that they had flour chips & would we want some, so we said yes. The rude waiter then came back to tell us that there would be a charge for the flour chips, so we declined. While we were waiting for our food, we noticed the bus boy bringing out chips & salsa to every other table except ours. When I asked our waiter if they had chips now, he rolled his eyes & gave me a flippant answer, directing the bus boy to bring some to our table. When he brought the food, he couldn’t remember who got what plate. He never came to check on us, never refilled our drinks, didn’t offer a to go box, & just threw the bill at us - didn’t ask if we wanted separate checks for each couple. Then there’s the payment processing fee??? The service was absolutely horrible, sub-par for the Scottsdale area. The food was average, definitely not worth the drive. I liked the decor & theme, but the atmosphere was awful. The attitude of every employee seemed as though they didn’t want to be there & had no regard for basic customer service! Such a disappointment, do...
