“New York-Style” Chinese Food? More Like a Sad Imitation
As a longtime Bronx guy, I know what real New York-style Chinese food is supposed to taste like. It’s bold, flavorful, and hits you with that perfect balance of sweet, salty, spicy, and umami. So when I saw this place advertising “New York-style” Chinese food, I figured I’d give it a shot. Big mistake.
On a true NYC scale of 1-10, this is a solid -7. The food is technically edible, but that’s about where the positives end. Every dish was bland, lacking that wok-fired punch that makes real NY Chinese food stand out. The sauces tasted watered down, the fried rice was just rice with some soy sauce mixed in, and the chicken? Let’s just say I’ve had more flavorful napkins.
And don’t even get me started on the egg roll—completely tasteless. No crunch, no seasoning, just an empty shell of what should’ve been a crispy, flavorful bite. It’s like they made it with the idea of an egg roll rather than an actual egg roll.
I wasn’t expecting Chinatown-level greatness, but I was at least hoping for something close to what you’d find at any decent takeout spot in the Bronx. Instead, I got a sad, uninspired version that barely resembles what it’s trying to imitate. Would it kill them to add some garlic, ginger, or anything resembling seasoning?
Bottom line: If you’re craving real New York-style Chinese food, keep looking. This ain’t it. Sorry Florida,...
Read moreFirst off, this place is take out only. If you're looking for a nice sit down dinner with plenty of ambience, this isn’t it - and its not supposed to be. It's take out only. We have been buying take out from these people for over seven years. I was originally taught to cook Chinese food from someone who literally learned in China. My husband and I have eaten in China towns in various cities. We do know Chinese food. The food we have bought here is delicious and generous. We buy Egg drop Wonton soup. The wontons are always fresh and cooked just right - never stale. I buy curry beef. I love it. My husband buys various dishes. Tonight its General Tso chicken, crab rangoon, and a few other things. The food is always fresh and the servings big enough to get two and sometimes three meals out of them. I know there are numerous food snobs out there who want to throw shade but the food here has, for us been reliably fresh, hot, flavorful and affordable. It's not fancy....
Read moreThe food was superb. I must say, it was delivered promptly on time and fresh from whatever device they used, which is inarguably very effective for my wait was not long, and the food was delicious. A young boy studied math beside me as I ate, a son of the restaurant owners, and he studied with great gumption as his brother drilled him through and through on the angles withing triangles, and the proper assessment of when to name an angle "acute", "obtuse", or "right". It was an amazing display of brotherly affection through trial and error, and although the studying was distracting at times, for a gentleman and I were having a very exceptional discussion on our career paths and other things which, of course, I must not mention, the brothers reminded me of my own childhood. If I may, I will return to my first point, which is to say, I enjoyed my stay at Bamboo Wok, and the food was very fit for my tastes, as...
