Local/regional restaurant chain. The staff is always friendly and with the friendly staff comes a policy that is rare in this day & age... No tipping! As any barbecue lover knows, barbecue styles & flavors change in each region. This place is Southeastern Missouri style Bar-B-Q. More Specifically, it is Dexter, MO style. The restaurant, who's name comes from a town near Sikeston is home to other restaurants with a similar style/flavor of BBQ. All the meats here are dry-rubbed and served with no sauce. They do offer sauces for you to enjoy on your BBQ. The classic Kansas City style sauce(like Bullseye or Sweet Baby Ray's), North Carolina style(mustard based), Hot/Louisiana style, and South East Missouri style(vinegar based). To enjoy this barbecue as originally intended you need to try it with the South East Missouri sauce, this sauce is not spicy but it fits have a tang and slight sweetness to it. It is thin and I've seen many people use it as a vinaigrette dressing on salads. Last, but not least, you must try their ribs. They aren't the most tender/fall-off-the-bone type ribs, but they are tender & moist and are very flavorful. They pair excellently with the vinegar based sauce. And on Mondays they sell cold slabs of ribs for you to take home & eat later so cheap, you couldn't prepare your own ribs at home for the price. Any BBQ lover must try Dexter Bar-B-Q. I enjoy all types of BBQ and know that everyone thinks the BBQ style that is from their home town is the best style, and I won't say Dexter's is the best or even my favorite BBQ restaurant. But it's style is unique enough and good enough to warrant driving a little out of the way...
Read moreWe ate lunch late....probably about 1:30pm. There were no lines and someone quickly came to the counter and took our order. We went to sit down, but it was slim pickings for finding a table that didn't have trash at it from the previous customers. I counted 9 tables with trash at them. I understand that the tables aren't waited on, but I think a cleaner atmosphere would say a lot about the professional care of the appearance. I thought the food was a little on the high side, price-wise, but very tasty, and the soft-serve icecream was free. The music was nice...old fashioned, but the tv was very difficult to see as the lights obstructed the view. They would be better off mounting it on the wall under the lights, and mounting another on a different wall so everyone doesn't have to crane their neck to watch it. The bathroom was ok. Trash was also on the floor and one of the cooks or dishwasher guys had left a DISH TOWEL from the kitchen hanging on the handicap bar IN the toilet stall! I HOPED that they did NOT remember it and go back to use it in the kitchen the rest of the day! Therefore I didn't let them know it was in there. I don't know if I will go back after that. Usually one distasteful or uncomfortable visit deters me from anywhere. I may try it one more time later to see if there's been an improvement. Although since the food itself was good, I may preorder for takeout like we always used to before the only and first day I went to dine in...
