purchased a cake for our daughter's first birthday. honestly, i have nothing good to say about the cake itself. the only saving grace is that the staff is extremely friendly, and our cake was prepared on time. having said that, i must admit the cake was unexpectedly disappointing.
first, and foremost, the cake was quite literally dryer than any other cake I've ever tasted. the icing was dry, and seemed to harden into a jagged "crust" that ultimately led to the decorations failing (that we purchased from an artisan bakery in new york). we requested no writing so that we could place our own design atop the cake, only to have the decor become destroyed upon the first slice. the icing was so dry that it had to be moistened with water uaing a kitchen spritzer, but even then the cake topper slid down into the cake with each subsequent slice. it was too dry for the topper to properly adhere, so it was unable to withstand the cutting process.
second, the cake was overly priced for the amount and design. the cake was quite thin, with only a single piping of purple trim. wr ordered a plain white cake with white icing, so it seemed a safe bet for our daughter and party guests. to our astonishment, our daughter ate approximately two bites, and choked on the dryness before guzzling half of her cup of water. the guests all complained of the cake being extremely dry, and aome even passed on the cake altogether. so with over 3/4 of a cake still remaining, and no guest willing to take any home, we are most likely going to dispose of the cake. additionally, the cake arrived in a small disposable baking pan, which slid around inside the cardboard box, leaving a huge smudged corner. 20$ later and a party full of dissatisfied guests, I'm wishing i would have purchased a baking mix and some premade icing and constructed a cake on my own.
bottom line, this bakery is great for donuts and the like, but ultimately fails in their cake baking endeavors. save your time and money and go elsewhere...unless your goal is to disappoint a sweet little girl on...
Read moreSpring Hill Pastry is without a doubt the best bakery known. I am 70 and have been going there since i was a kid. For many years I have not lived in WV but make sure I can go when I am back. Their vacation for two weeks over the 4th of July often makes it difficult. I have lived just outside NYC, NC, VT, DE and WA state and only Olympia, WA had a bakery that came close to how good this place is. We all have had our favorites. I have always like their white cookies. They fancied up the name and now they call them wedding cookies. My daughter loved the star cookies and I always make sure I bring back several dozen for her. We all think their white wedding cake is the best made. There cream horns, chocolate eclairs, cream puffs and on and on are just the best. If people want to complain because an exhausted staff closes before they get there to bad. None of us are that special. They close when they close. I am sure people call every single day asking them to stay open just a little bit for them. Be considerate of them and don't ask this staff that has been on their feet for hours...

Until our recent visit with family in WV, I had never been to SHPS. Once we arrived, my Uncle David told me that he loved their Hot Dogs. What a funny thought, a pastry shop selling Hot Dogs? But he laughed and told me about these fascinating "Hot Dogs".
In our 4 day stay, I managed to try these, the Creme-filled Brownies, Chocolate Covered Buttercream Icing Cupcakes, Lemon Meringue Pie, and their Donuts. 🤤🥐🍩🎂🥧😋 Btw, the Hot Dogs are pictured, a hot dog shaped pastry with a delicious cream icing throughout the middle sprinkled with powdered sugar. 🤤
Spring Hill, you rock the Charleston, WV area! My Mom brought goodies home to SC for us; needless to say, they did not have an extended stay!
If we lived closer, I would have a difficult time not indulging in a daily treat! Two thumbs way up for Spring Hill Pastry Shop; you do WV proud! 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻
my favorites were the Hot Dogs, Creme-filled Brownies, and the Chocolate Covered Buttercream...
