I have been Vietnam and had Pho from the north and the south. Vietnam is a long country and occupies the east coast of Southern Asia. Northern pho known as pho “bac” which translates to north. It’s more simple there, just beef soup with the essential 5 spice seasoning and tender sliced beef with fresh ginger. Southern pho has the “dac biet” which translates to special. Southern pho is packed with sliced beef rounds, and a variety of parts from the cow. This includes tripe, tendon, brisket, and beef balls, no fresh ginger. Portions in Vietnam are much smaller than the states and cost almost half.
Pho Hai has both, the Pho Bac and the Pho Dac Biet. But, what makes it even more special is they have sliced Kobe beef as an add on to their pho. OMG! Their Kobe is thick sliced, just enough marbling and just melts in my mouth. The bowls are enormous and can actually feed 2 person. It’s loaded with lots of meat, almost every bite has meat and noodles. They serve their pho with fresh Basil, herbs, bean sprouts, fresh cut jalapeño and slice of lemon.
The heart of a good Pho is the base of their soup, they use beef bones cooked for hours to extract all the beefy flavor of the broth.
When consuming pho, the first thing I do is to take a spoon and taste the broth before I go in for the kill. This is when you know you will enjoy the rest of your meal Or you know you will have dry mouth later from all the MSG. Many pho establishments skimp on using a lot of beef bones for the soup. Instead, they use MSG-mono sodium glutamate as a cheat. I never had a bad experience with Pho Hai, their soup is always on point.
They have a few secret items that is not on their menu, my favorite is the beef bone with beef marrow. This item is only available after 2pm and on a limited basis. It comes in a giant plate with a knife and fork, lots of meat and tendon is still stuck on the bone. The bonus is the bone marrow, it’s rich and savory. Also provide is a home made roasted chili sauce, dip the tendon or meat in and...
Read moreI had a decent visit to this place for a quick bite on the way home. Upon entering around 6pm, first thing I noticed was, where is everyone? I thought it was closed, all the chairs were on top of the tables upside-down except for the booths.
Young lady greeted me, very cordial. I ordered and paid up front for my meal and smoothie.
When food came out, it was visually mediocre. I ordered barbeque pork with egg cake and rice dish. My meat had 80% fat on it and not cooked all the way, the fish sauce was not made properly as it tasted very generic. Vegetables seem old to the taste so I didn't finish my meal. The smoothie(avocado) was the only thing done right, not too sugary or ice chunks inside. I left feeling not satisfied with overall experience.
I still would go there but i would order something else, give another try. Definitely order the...

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to Rosemead and went to Pho Hai restaurant on Garvey street, corner of Rosemead. I went with two people and ordered 2 dishes: Hue beef noodle soup and bucket-encrusted pho... Hue beef noodle soup that the store cooked had pork leg meat with skin on it but on it The skin is full of feathers that must not be shaved or plucked when eating. Seeing the thigh meat full of feathers is very flavorless to enjoy. Looking at it makes the chicken skin so creepy that it cannot be eaten. What do you think? I called the restaurant owner over and said why don't you chefs remove all the feathers before cooking this piece of meat? It looks too greasy and cannot be eaten. The owner said this thigh meat is cooked however it comes, it usually has feathers and is cooked with hair is normal, the owner was not aware of the shop's business and said it was normal for thigh meat to have hair, so how could it be pulled out? It's really irresponsible and unhygienic. really... What do you think when you see a piece of meat still full of hair when you eat and are about to put that piece of meat in your mouth, can you put that meat and hair full in your mouth.. I think it's real Unhygienic and inedible. Such a cooking method is sad, causing our Vietnamese food industry to be affected if foreign customers come...
