I have been going to Galletti's Coney Island for 45 years, it has been my favorite lunch place through those years. My favorite day is Thursday for the corned beef & cabbage special, corned beef and corned beef rueben sandwiches. They also have fantastic roast beef sandwiches. For 12 years running I had lunch there probably 49 Thursdays a year.
Today I went in for lunch, I sat at the bar. I ordered the small corned beef & cabbage special, I asked if the small special came with a roll, the bartender replied, no, would you like one? I replied yes.
I understand I N F L A T I O N, over the last few years the small special has increased in price from like $7.99 or $8.99 to $14.00. As stated, I understand inflation.
I feel CLIPPED, I was charged an extra $1.00 for the roll, which is ridiculous, AND it wasn't even the same "old" roll, it was a sandwich bun cut lengthwise and cut in half; and they charged me a 3% "convenience" fee for using a debit card.
Over the years I tipped in the 20 - 25% range, not this time, sorry bar tender lady, one dollar. CHEAP begets Cheap.
Greg & Mrs. G, the little things count; no longer a regular stop. It's going to be awhile before I/we come back again. It will have to be a very special occasion to warrant getting clipped again in such chintzy ways.
After reading several recent Yelp reviews, I see there appears to be no pattern of the Galletti's responding in any form, indicating a careless lack of regard for, and interest in, their patrons.
Is the Coney going downhill like so many other places?
The historic mantle they hold (held) in the community SHOULD be maintained.
Now is a time for small businesses to care for and nurture long-time customers, not nickel & dime them after 40% menu price increases that, understanding inflation, we're willing to pay.
What's next, charging for ketchup by the squirt?
...done with this review; and all but done with the Coney.
Farewell OLD Friends.
After posting my "review" I received a response from the Coney Island which I appreciate, "explaining" what went wrong...
I do not completely "buy-off" on the apology/explanation but I do see it as a step in the right direction; given my long history and the many, many, many, many dollars I have spent there over 45 years never having been offered as much as a free drink, now with the criticism, I'm offered a mere...

This is a classic western bar/diner. There's a lot of history in this building. It has a small town feel to it. Definitely not the modern foodie type. But very good food. The soups are always great. The steak sandwhich on Wednesdays is my favorite. Just go there and support a small...
