Growing up and currently living 50 miles from Tijuana, I'm extremely particular about Mexican food. Having visited the Upstate regularly for almost 20 years, I've mostly just avoided Mexican food. Having tried a few places that were painfully underwhelming in past years, there was desire to find a treasure that had potential to become a go-to place for this spoiled SoCal native.
Then I found the treasure in El Potosino. On my last night in South Carolina, I made my way to this small spot in a deserted parking lot. It was well worth the difficulty finding and the many many minutes of research spent. The first promising sign was a beautiful tía making tortillas by hand. No machine, just pure muscle and skill. Even in SoCal, it's not terribly common and I commend them for the dedication it takes. Next to her, another tía making a homemade tamarind punch, with fruit and sugar cane. Friendly and kind, both ladies have obviously dedicated themselves to feeding customers with love and good food. The tamarind puch's warmness cut through a frigid night while we waited for our order. The tamarind was neither weak nor overpowering and tasted delicious.
We ordered the carne asada tacos and burrito; suadero burrito; al pastor burrito (I would have ordered birria but it's only available on Saturdays); and a suadero taco. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't come with avocado, but also understand that prices for the fabulous fruit are quite high in South Carolina and the quality can be questionable. Not putting them in their burritos is better than paying high dollar for potentially subpar aguacate that people won't like or eat. It might be that I'm just too used to having them in almost all burritos in my home area.
I ate my pastor with the verde salsas included in our order and cilantro. The red salsa is quite spicy and verde salsas always taste better with pork do I stuck with them. Another wonderful reminder of places back home, cilantro and onion in plastic baggies. The portion was very large and a great value.
I'll be back to this tiny spot on Asheville Hwy in the future and send much thanks to the staff for sending me off with a memorable meal. If you want authentic food, this...
Read moreAbsolute gem. We got the birria tacos and the chicken quesadilla - both absolutely delicious, and enormous! The vibe is perfect - picnic tables under a tent (with a fan!), kids could watch the older lady making tortillas, dance to the mariachi music, or just run around; there was a full salsa bar, everything you could want for a quick, casual,...
