Living up north of the Merritt off High Ridge road, we have been passing by El Torito Deli every day since they opened up, and decided to give them a try last week – looking for an occasional alternative to the Italian, Chinese, and American options we have nearby. I was pleasantly surprised to see how broad their menu was, and was drawn to the Guatemala section. The Bisteck a lo Pobre had a really nice combination of ingredients and was very tasty – nicely balanced between salt, heat, and savory. Read moreMy husband and I came to this place because it got great reviews. I am unsure if people love the Italian food here, but we had latino food and it was not flavorful. The pupusas were awful, the curtido tasted like plain bagged cabbage, the beans tasted like canned beans without any flavor, and the salsa that goes with the chips only tasted a bit like oil. Also, the corn tortillas had a chewy texture and were not soft. We will not come back. Hoping others may have a better experience and this was only a one-day bad experience. Maybe the cook was new?
