I have been craving shrimp gumbo and with Christmas being just around the corner...who has time to cook? lol Saturday I decided to get gumbo, to go, from Richard's. I hadn't eaten there in years, but from what I remembered, everything was always consistently good. So, I decided to take a chance and I went and ordered the gumbo for myself, and the grilled shrimp salad for my daughter. The young girl taking my order was nice...though not overly friendly. As I was waiting for them to prepare my order, I looked around inside. My phone was broken, so I couldn't take any photos. Next time I plan to. But, as I was looking at the fresh shrimp for sale, I inquired whether they had been previously frozen, and the young clerk replied, yes. She also said they were the same shrimp the restaurant used in preparing their gumbo. I decided to buy some. All of the fresh seafood that I have purchased from them in the past has always been good. Soon my order arrived. An older woman checked me out and she couldn't have been nicer or more personable! After arriving home and checking my order, I discovered the gumbo came in a large brown paper bag that was placed inside another clear plastic bag. I found this very convenient because it prevents leakage...though that wasn't a problem because everything was securely packaged. A large styrofoam bowl was included and a gumbo spoon, as was rice and potato salad. Everything was still piping hot when I opened it, even though it was very cold outside. The gumbo was full of shrimp and the potato salad was perfect...in my humble opinion. It had a hint of sweetness, but it was more savory than sweet. The gumbo itself was also perfect...better than any I have ordered anywhere else. The portion size was more than generous. The shrimp salad was large and my daughter said it was delicious! If you find yourself wanting shrimp gumbo and you don't feel like cooking, or you don't have the time, go to Richard's. You couldn't be in...
Read moreI ordered food to go so I can't really speak to in-house service or atmosphere. I was in town visiting and ordered up a fried catfish dinner that came with coleslaw, fries, and hushpuppies. I also ordered the deep-fried mushrooms because where I live, not many places offer them. To be honest, the portions were generous. Especially the mushrooms. I have to rate them a bit separate because they tasted like the oil in which the mushrooms were made was old- too old. Like when you visit a place where they don't change the oil out and the the taste goes from a delightfully crisp and crunchy addition to the juicy mushrooms to a bad taste altogether. I ate a few, but couldn't finish them. The catfish did not have that same taste from the oil, so that was good but they gave me the smallest amount of tartar sauce I've ever seen. Maybe half the size of any other place's condiment to-go containers. Great catfish doesn't require sauce, and tho this catfish was good- without lemon juice being supplied, it wasn't great on its own. I've always received some sliced lemon with catfish, but here there was none and it definitely needed a bit of help to thoroughly enjoy. The hushpuppies were okay, but very small. Coleslaw was decent. Fries were okay but nothing to get excited about. I was a bit worried when I placed my order and they said it would be ready in 5 minutes. Folks, that's a bad sign. No fresh seafood (or any other) should be ready in 5 minutes. Sorry, but I...
Read moreI had heard good things and decided to take my out of town guest to Richards. We ordered oyster PoBoys. The oysters were rank. The didn't taste like oysters. Very close to being spoiled. We took one small bite and no more. We didn't try anything else. By the time the waitress came back to the table, my 6 year old grandson was finished eating and he was ready to go. I was afraid that my pregnant daughter was going to get sick from food poisoning. Fortunately, she was fine the next day. Don't order oysters there. It was enough that I will never be back. BTW. Don't order water. The water is Sulfur tap water and is disgusting. I wasn't going to try iced tea since it's made with the same water. No disguising that tastes. Since then, I have read horror stories about Sulfur water. They should warn you before ordering water. I got my bottle water out of the car and drank it while we were there. Lots of regulars go there. I'm sure they know what to order. I wouldn't chance it. No pride in food from my experience. That being said, I am sure there's lots of health violations and cleanliness of kitchen is a concern. Gordon Ramsay needs to go check out their kitchen for his show,...
