We went midday to avoid the lunch and dinner rush. We were the only ones there and our server was very nice and attentive. The place was very clean and comfortable. We ordered the dinner for 3/4 with choice of 3 meats and 2 sides. We choose St. Louis ribs, chicken and up graded from pulled pork to brisket. The dark meat chicken was good, the breast was a bit dry but all had little smoke flavor. The ribs were good but not cooked enough as they still had a lot of fat and cartalidge that was not melted goodness but just greasy with somewhat chewy meat. I think ribs should have some texture and not fall off the bone entirely but these were definitely pulled premature. Seasoning was good. The brisket.... We were all so disappointed... It was tough and dry period. I couldn't even finish my one slice with sauce and I am not acoustom to putting sauce on any BBQ. If the meat is seasoned and cooked properly the sauce is just a distraction. Cannot comment on the beans as I don't care for any baked/BBQ beans and did not try them. Potato salad was equivalent to a grocery deli case and good but hardly memorable. Ordered side of Mac and Cheese, it was about as exciting as the potato salad but more dry. We ordered the Salt and Vinegar wings as an appetizer and the were probably the best part of our meal. Was surprised to taste liquid smoke though considering they run a smoker most of the time it not 24/7. But they were good All and all we probably won't return any time soon and we were regulars at the Sumner location. I am an avid cook/trained chef and my husband and I smoke meat often to entertain. I am often disappointed in every day restaurants, but my expectations for specialty restaurants are slightly higher and we were really disappointed. Enough so to write this review, which is something I rarely do. I spent years as a food and beverage manager and understand some people complain over the most rediculous things and I never do without a lot of consideration. I in fact probably wouldn't have if my silly phone had not prompted me to every time I looked at it...
Read morePulling into the parking lot you are greeted by an incredible smell of smoke from a massive smoker kept in the corner of their lot, surrounded by wood. You walk in and the place is incredibly unassuming, it feels like a bbq place in Fort Worth. The staff, however, was phenomenal. They were incredibly polite and beyond friendly and helpful. I sometimes sense a bit of disingenuous tones when staff is this great but I felt they were genuinely happy to see us.
Oh man, the food here was phenomenal! Four of us visited and my buddy and his girlfriend ordered the combo #2 which came with St. Louis ribs, brisket, a half chicken, Mac and cheese, 6 cornbread muffins (which were a good size), and potato salad. They also ordered salt and pepper chicken wings and onion rings. I ordered a three meat combo with St. Louis ribs, brisket, and pulled pork as well as two sides (I chose cowboy beans and onion rings). And my girlfriend ordered the brisket dip with fries.
The ribs were incredibly moist while falling off the bone. Their flavor was Smokey and very slightly peppery, some of the best ribs I’ve ever eaten. The pulled pork was good, not the best I’ve ever eaten but I think it’s because they don’t hide it behind a sauce, instead letting you sauce it if you want. And the brisket kept the Smokey flavoring alive, while adding that rich brisket taste we all love. The cowboy beans... man alive! They had bacon and brisket in them and I couldn’t eat them fast enough. And the onion rings, fluffy, crispy, and just the right amount of doughy taste. All of this is almost enough to make you forget about the corn bread, except that it was soooo good.
The rest of the group ate quickly because it was so delectable, and offered nothing but praise about the establishment. I also got their sweet tea and it was not quite as sweet as you’d get in the south, but close, which in my opinion is a good thing. My only complaint would be that their “spicy” bbq sauce was nothing near spicy (it tasted...
Read moreI have to say I am glad my semi tractor's communication system with our load planner was having service issues, because my partner and I got to eat here. We both ordered the trail boss, I got brisket and pulled pork, with sides of potato salad and baked beans. Partner got ribs instead of brisket, everything else was the same. I tasted everything before smothering it in their spicy BBQ sauce, and everything tasted great. The brisket was, in my opinion, perfectly cooked, not dry, and had the right amount of cooking, so that it had just ever so thin layer of a burnt crisp on the outside. This is not to say it was charred, or even tasted slightly charred. The pulled pork was very juicy, and very flavorful. I ordered a bun for it, and it was lightly buttered and toasted on a stove, from what I could tell. Both sides tasted great. My only complaint about the sides would be their size. Partner especially liked the beans. We also ordered a single side of fries, and split them. They weren't bad, I just didn't care for them. It was nice that the ticket was correctly showing half of the price split on both tickets. I had a strawberry lemonade to drink, which tasted great, not too sweet, and not too much strawberry. I never had to ask for a refill. A little less ice would have been better, but that's my fault for not specifying. My only complaint here is that it was just a little pricy. Around $2.75, I think, but has refills. The server was just a tad slow, but I did not feel like I had been waiting for too long, and did not feel like I was being ignored. She also came to check on us at least four times during the meal. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area, wish there was one close to where I live, and will be eating here any chance I get when delivering a load of freight...
