Let me start by saying I coulda/woulda/shoulda reviewed this place years ago, as it was the bar nearest my residence for a number of years. This bar wins "Best of" awards annually because it IS the total package. Few places can rival the vibe, atmosphere, and food quality that has become the standard for BLB's.
This review was prompted by the debut of their Sunday Brunch. You'll find many items that you find on any Brunch menu, but BLB's just do more with it, in the best of ways.
I started with the most ubiquitous of Brunch drinks; a Bloody Mary and a Mimosa variant.
What sets their Mary apart is a choice of heat levels directly coordinating with the Hot Ones wing sauces. I had #3, fermented kimchi, and it was so good! A great balance of flavor and heat!
The Mimosa variant I tried was a "Trailer Park Mimosa" pairing the champagne of beers, Miller High Life, with OJ. Might sound crazy, but it was very good!
The citrusy Trailer Park Mimosa perfectly complimented the Lemon Ricotta Fritters appetizer. These things were fantastic! Perfectly round and fried, they were like giant donut holes that were just sweet enough and served with a berry dipping sauce that made it an app I'll order again and again!
I ordered the Full Frenchie Breakfast for my entree. Two eggs cooked to order, hash brown patties that are reminiscent of McD's back when that place still cared about making food taste good, choice of bacon or sausage, and four thick cut French toast triangles with syrup. All of it was executed perfectly.
Then it was on to the boozy coffee drink known as "I creamed my coconut!" Coffee liqueur, cold brew coffee, coconut rum, cream, coconut whipped cream, and garnished with toasted coconut flakes! It was amazing and I'd go back just for that!
Last but not least, our server Kendyle was great! She was busy but still attentive. Everything ordered was accurate, brought out promptly, and delivered with a smile and/or a nice comment as she did.
This was an amazing experience, and I will absolutely be back for another round soon! If you're like me, you've been highly disappointed by the quality of food and service in many restaurants and bars since March of 2020, but BLB's is absolutely nailing it. Do yourself a favor; if anything I've listed sounds good to you, go check it out...
Read moreTalk about a fun time! as far as bars go, this could become one of my/your favorite spots to come back to.
I definitely get a vibe that this is a bar that has a lot of repeat costumers. It's so lively, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you're about to meet an old friend. By all means, It still retains a roguish, delinquent charm that every good bar has, and yet it's still welcoming.
Every staff member I had a conversation with, no matter how small, acted as if we had known each other since high school. It was insanely casual, and I really felt like I could drop the public niceties and be my self.
A thing that I enjoy doing in bars/pubs is ordering a very peculiar shot, just to see if they'll make it; I order a shot of whipped-cream, topped with a slice of bacon and a cherry. Usually they do not come through on this order, but Big Leagues Brew was more than delighted to deliver my special request!
The food was actually very good. I had one of their vegan options; The "Pretenders" as they are called, is vegan chicken tenders in a basket of fries. They were surprisingly delicious, and with their crack sauce, addicting. The pricing for food is fair, and I would highly recommend giving their "Pretenders" a try, even if you're not vegan.
It looks like they have evening events, as well. I wasn't participating, but from the bar I could see that they were playing a "song guessing game" with the customers, and it looked like a ton of fun!
Big League Brew is the perfect spot to bring a friend or a date. It's friendly, energetic, but not overwhelmingly so. It's dark and feels like a biker bar, but isn't trying to scare you. The food is superb and the staff was even more delightful. I can't wait to visit...
Read moreThis should be 3 1/2 stars, but I feel generous. First visit. We've driven past 100s of times going to our normal destination further away on Van Born. BLB is walking distance from our home.
Positives: great server, 3 of the 4 meals were flavorful. Onions rings were 5 stars! Good clean atmosphere. My Oberon was perfect. Temperature and carbonation spot on. And served so fast. A lot of options on the menu.
Negatives: 15 minutes for chips and salsa? WTH?! How long does it take to throw chips on a plate and salsa in a bowl? We actually questioned the server as to if she put the order in. Wife's 2nd Mule was all lime juice, had to send it back. My pulled pork sandwich was pretty much room temperature and lacking the BBQ sauce mentioned on the menu. How do you serve (cold) pulled pork without BBQ sauce?
Like every place we try for the first time, we will try 2 more times and edit as necessary. For a place that charges almost $20 for 12 chicken wings I expected better...
