My neighbor had been hyping this place up because we have another place that we prefer. We gave in and went with them and WOW what a horrible experience. We sat and waited for 30 minutes before my friend got up and asked if we could have someone take our order. This must have set the mood because from that point the waitress was horrible to my friend. Everything she asked she got a snarky remark made back. They had decided that we would not get service. After an hour and half I decided I had waited long enough and was ready to leave. No food, no refills, nothing. That is the exact time our food, two of our party came out. I suppose they heard me say I was ready to leave. Not all of the food came out but it came one at a time. We all got our food except for my friends 8 yr old son so she asked the waitress about it. The waitress said it had to be recooked and it would come later. When the waitress brought the food she reached over my friends plate, no higher than two inches, I thought she was going to drag her arm through her plate. At this time my friend became furious and had to get up and leave. Fast forward to checkout, we paid 80$ total for HORRIBLE SERVICE, HORRIBLE FOOD , and the worst experience ever. My friend was so angry that she told the waitress that her attitude and treatment was uncalled for. The waitress started yelling at my friend and the owner came over. I told the owner that this was our first time here and I was shocked at the behavior of the waitress. The owner told my friend that the waitress is her daughter and we did not have to come back. Basically that they had plenty of business without ours. Good to know I would not...

When I think of a great Mexican food restaurant, I think of a small, family owned local place like the one I grew up with. Las Cocinas is the definition of this for the somewhat small town of Bastrop. We dropped in on a Sunday night after a weekend at the races and we left knowing we made the right choice.

The chips were fresh and crisp and came with two different types of dip. I wasn't that impressed with either which is really my only complaint about the food and it might just be my preference. I really like hot, tomatoey salsa and this just wasn't that.

My brother-in-law, stepdad and I shared a sampler platter with bacon-wrapped shrimp, quesadillas, taquitos, and some kinda deep fried shrimp/stuffed jalapeño thing that was really tasty.

After the sampler, my brother-in-law and I shared Fajitas with shrimp and ribs and my stepdad got enchiladas. The compliments didn't stop throughout the entire meal. I really liked the rice and the tortillas were obviously homemade and very fresh.

The service was exactly as you would expect at a small restaurant like this. The waitress was experienced and attentive. We couldn't have asked for more.

The check ended up around $60 with tip for the 3 of us. We didn't have any alcohol tonight or that would have been a bit more.

If you're in the mood for a great, small-town Mexican food restaurant you won't be disappointed with...

Out of town and passing by Bastrop, Tx saw this place and decided to give it a try due to good reviews on Google. The restaurant was clean and family ambiance. We were greeted by a young boy that is either rude or uneducated. My wife usually asks our waiter/waitress for their name if no name tag is available and tells my boys "tell (name of the person) what you want to order" We have always done that with our boys..anyways..my wife asked the young boy what his name was....the boy replied rudely " I don't have a name" and walked away. We stayed looking at each other in denial of what had just happened. Seco ds later he came back and he asked for our drinks, I order an apple drink and he brought me a completely different drink, I made him aware and he said what I ordered was not available. Another table came about 10 minutes later and the drink I have ordered (that was not available) was served to someone at that table. This guy had no customer service and was rude. Another lady who got our food and brought us chips and salsa was very polite and friendly. I don't know if this young kid had a bad day, is uneducated or just rude. Food was good and very tasty but honestly overpriced for the amount of food you get in your plate. Have been to many restaurants were food is the same or way better and the prices are not...

What a great experience! The first thing notable was the AMAZING service! The 2 ladies and one young man that served us never missed a beat and were very polite. Both salsas were so tasty, you also get queso and warm chips 😋 Once the food arrived my boyfriend teased me bc as I tried each item on my skillet I complimented how flavorful and good it was…. He said that I said the food was “so good” 9 times 🤣 seriously though everything really was delicious! I overheard the ladies at the table next to us saying the same thing. Can’t deny the tastiness! We both got a carne asada plate, definitely try it when you go! The meat was tender, seasoned to perfection, and caramelized with onions & peppers. The rice was perfect and the borracho beans were the best I’ve ever had. Oh yea, the horchata was delicious too!

Las Cocinas is widely known by locals to be one of the best places to find Mexican food in Bastrop. My family has been coming to Las Cocinas for years and years. I don’t live in Texas anymore, but anytime I am in town, this is one of the first places I visit. It is a family business, run by some of the nicest people you will ever meet, and the food is excellent. They serve the best shrimp on the grill in town, but you can’t go wrong with their fajita steak or sampler plate either. As long as Las Cocinas is open, they will continue to receive my business.

I have wintered in Mexico for a number of years and this food is better than much of the food I've had there... I was immediately served a basket of tortilla chips and two really excellent salsas - one green and one red...while I only had one dish - the Coctel de Camarón(shrimp cocktail - pictured) based on its perfection, I can highly recommend this restaurant...it has a very large menu which I'm looking forward to trying many of their other dishes...¡Buen provecho!
