But, dear reader, let me assure you that my journey reached its zenith at this unassuming yet utterly captivating mobile culinary oasis in the heart of the Lone Star State.
As I approached the vibrant, colorful truck, parked in a bustling corner of San Antonio, I was immediately struck by the palpable, welcoming energy that seemed to radiate from its very core. The exterior, adorned with eye-catching illustrations that hinted at the origins of the legendary cheesesteak, whispered to me tales of the sandwich's humble beginnings in the City of Brotherly Love. As I stood there, mesmerized, I could sense that I was about to embark on a culinary expedition that would forever change my perception of the cheesesteak universe.
The intoxicating aroma of sizzling onions and bell peppers wafted through the air, mingling with the mouth-watering scent of thinly sliced, perfectly seasoned beef. It felt as if the very essence of Philadelphia had been captured and transported thousands of miles to this small, yet bustling corner of San Antonio, TX. I eagerly approached the window, my anticipation reaching a fever pitch as the symphony of sounds and smells overwhelmed my senses.
At the helm of this cheesesteak paradise on wheels was none other than the proprietor himself, Malik, a gracious and affable gentleman with a warm smile and an unmistakable twinkle in his eye. He greeted me with the familiarity of a long-lost friend and, without hesitation, set about crafting my very own edible masterpiece.
The artistry with which Malik wielded his spatula was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Each slice of beef, each morsel of onion, each tender bell pepper, expertly tossed and cooked to perfection, as if guided by some divine force. As the pièce de résistance, he lovingly draped the melty, velvety cheese over the mound of succulent ingredients, and I knew, in that moment, that I was witnessing the birth of a culinary legend.
The first bite of my Philly's Phamous Cheesesteak was nothing short of transcendent. The explosion of flavors and textures, the seamless harmony of savory, tender beef, the sweet crunch of onions and peppers, and the rich, creamy embrace of the cheese – it all combined to create a symphony of taste that reverberated through my very soul.

Read moreI don't know who the hell Malik is, but I'm about to start telling people he's my second cousin on my father's side. My guy's cheesesteaks are ON POINT! I'm from the northeast and after NYC, Philly is my favorite city. I've eaten at all the "best" cheesesteak places in the city and Malik's is right up there with the best, dare I say even better. As I stood in line at the food truck park trying to decide which cheesesteak to get, I heard the ancestors calling to me, "Pick the one that sounds most authentic." I skipped the Elder Eats. No shade, but that seemed too SATX for my people, and settled on the Malik Cheesesteak. Black Jesus anointed that sandwich from bread to mayo. Black angels sung out the hallelujah chorus when I bit into it. My spirit was comforted as I ate the food of my people. The meat was seasoned. Not "salt and pepper is too spicy" seasoned, but "Big Mama in Soul Food" seasoned. The bread was fluffy and warm, the toppings minimal because the meat was doing the heavy lifting. Utter perfection. Even the fries seemed to taste like they touched the hem of Marcus Garvey's cloak. THIS is what San Antonio is missing. Authentic food, made by folks who know what the hell they're doing and don't try to go overboard with the gimmicks. Malik and his whole crew are invited to the cookout now...
