Las Ranitas Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Thief River Falls

Visited Las Ranitas tonight for the first time in a couple years since I posted my previous glowing review. I officially retract my previous review because ownership or employees have obviously changed. Food isn't as good and service had gone completely into the ditch!

I won't get into a lot of details but our waiter was condescending, arrogant and frankly insulting. I inquired about a dish they had on their menu previously and our waiter acted insulted and said "they didn't have that any more!" I said OK - I'll find something else so he just walked away and payed ALL his attention to the 8-Top next to us. Brought out plates and plates and plates to them. Fine - we were in no hurry we just expected he'd give us a "I'll be right with you folks" comment and he never did....OKAY I'm into details but this guy was really a jerk!

Bottom line - our meal was mediocre and when it came to a tip my wife and I agreed on the low side but we would leave 10% as something. She payed and he didn't even say thank you at the till so she left $0! Probably first time ever for us. As we were pulling away I saw him run outside, look and spin around and go back in the restaurant. Looking for us bro? Would have been an even bigger mistake than all the others you made tonight! What a bad vibe...

Okay, so we just ordered two family deals (15 tacos and 15 street tacos - a variety of steak, chicken, pork and ground beef) for two families to share (8 people total - 4 adults and 4 kids) and it was INCREDIBLE!!!!!! It was so much food (would easily serve 12 or more people). The food was fresh, homemade and delicious. I cannot stress enough how huge the portions were - two large portions of rice and refried beans were also included (barely made it through half of each container) plus two large tubs of salsa (barely made a ding in one), the most delicious salsa verde and guacamole, and two large bags of tortilla chips. We ordered from our hotel and went to pick up - they give you a number and then it’s a very easy drive up to the window to pick up. Seriously look no further than ordering from this restaurant. It was incredible! Super reasonable pricing - less than going out for fast food. Tons of leftovers for tomorrow. One thing to note - cutlery was not included. Walmart is almost in the same parking lot - we dipped in there to buy some disposable plates and cutlery...

Customer service was crap. I didn't know the menu, and when asking the waiter questions, he was impatient with me. I asked if the tacos came in a corn tortilla, and he said, of course, there mexican tacos, haha. Sadly, the tacos were far from mexican as flavor is concerned. I know it's in Minnesota, but I expected the food to have some flavor. Taco shell was covered in grease, like straigt from a pan of ground beef. They like you to pay in cash and have a sign stating it. I'm not sure why, but when paying with my card, he wouldn't hand my card back to me. He sat it down on the counter where I paid and immediately walked away. He didn't ask about my visit or how my food was. They are super chatty with the locals but only spoke little to me. All in all I will say that the restaurant isn't too bad on the inside. A few ceiling tiles are broken and / or missing. Looks like maybe some rain got in. No passion for the food! It's sad to think people open restaurants and don't care. Won't be coming back! Can't wait for the crappy reply to my...
