Nice island. We did the team tour which wasn't 50% closed due to the roads being down, so if you're visiting in the next few months considering hiring a bike. In terms of food this is the only place on the island to eat. So If you visit bring your own food. Unless you like to eat Mexican for lunch. Nothing really for kids here and for a place that proclaims everything is freshly made to order, a simple cheese sandwich felt like a big ask. Read moreFirst things first. Eat here and you won't be complaining about standard park visitor center slop. The food was good. The nachos were enormous and the sandwiches were great.
All of that aside - daaaaaang this place was expensive...like, I have to deduct a whole star expensive. Ouch!
The other thing to remember. If you're visiting as a part of a tour (say a joint Alcatraz tour) be prepared for a little timing anxiety as you wait and wait for your order while you're expecting your departing boat to arrive.

Read moreIf you ever get a chance to go to San Francisco and you want to do Alcatraz I recommend doing Alcatraz and Angel Island combo. Angel Island offers a lot of educational things that happened in the ww II. We ended up eating at a taco place call Cantina in the island. I was very impressed I had the chicken adobo tacos they were seriously amazing.
