We’d heard rave reviews about Fernando’s breakfast and were told they closed at noon on Sundays. So we made the drive to Tieton and arrived at 11:17, excited to try it out. The restaurant was bustling, but a few tables were still open—everything pointed to a great experience ahead.
Instead, Fernando stepped out from the kitchen and, without hesitation, said, “We’re closed. Don’t you see the sign?” It was jarring. As the only non-Hispanic patrons in the room, I’d hate to believe we were being profiled—but it was hard not to feel that way in the moment. If only he knew how deeply I support all workers, regardless of race or background.
