I've been going here for a few years now as a local (maybe once every 2 weeks?), and it's my favorite local mexican restaurant, and they're family-owned. Be prepared for a long review!
The staff are friendly, the food is flavorfully delicious, and free chips and salsa is given before any meal. I recommend ordering queso with the meal for an additional price! I've tried a lot of their menu, and haven't disliked anything yet (granted, I have a large flavor palette). I also recommend trying out the "jarritos" drinks (they're non-alcoholic) if you typically enjoy soda. You have to pay per drink, but they're fruit flavored sodas in a sealed bottle and they're tasty. I also tend to notice jarritos taste a bit lighter than regular soda too, but maybe that's just me. Last time I came here (a few weeks ago), it was my birthday, and their birthday treatment was really fun, you should totally come for your birthday if you're into that! I know that I sound overly positive about this place, but it's genuinely my favorite place to eat locally.
One bit of trivia I learned today when my dad asked the staff: -Apparently the name "La Marimba" is actually named after an instrument! It's a type of xylophone.
One small suggestion I would make to improve the menu (besides it, everything's great): -Other local mexican restaurants have two queso sizes (large & small), while La Marimba only has a large queso size. It would be cool to eventually see a second size.
One thing to note: Portion sizes are generally large, even for appetizers, so expect to typically need a carry-out box.
Some dishes I've had before: -Enchilada Ranchera (my typical go-to meal) -Shrimp and Crab Enchiladas (my dad's go-to) -Fiesta Burrito Bowl (would get again, definitely a personal craving meal) -La Bamba Burrito (it felt a bit big, but it was good. I'm personally more of an enchilada person, but I would get it again) -Camarones en chipolte (I liked it, but I’m not going to crave it randomly or anything) -street tacos (just tried one today, and these are a pretty solid option. I especially enjoyed the green sauce that came on the side) -Pollo en chipolte (pretty good, I don't remember the taste enough to review properly) -Taco Salad (I like the outside shell, but it's as you would expect. If you like taco bowls it's good, but I'm not much of a taco-salad-in-a-shell person. My dad loved it though.) -Quesadilla (these were surprisingly really good?? For a simple meal I wasn't expecting it to taste that good) -Ceviche (I just tried this today, and it's REALLY good, might be a new go-to. I've tried peruvian ceviche in America before, and I would say it's pretty comparable? Biggest difference being that the peruvian version is raw, and I believe the shrimp in this one was cooked.) -Guacamole (this was really good, but for some reason I prefer the queso?) -Queso (if you have the extra money to spend, this is a great addition to the meal. It's creamy when it first comes out, then hardens as it cools. It's white cheese.) -the birthday dessert (I can't find it on the menu but it reminded me of churros, and it was super sweet but really good) -black beans (I personally don't like them here but I've heard that some people do) -refried beans (I personally enjoy these.) -rice (the rice is almost orange in color, I believe it's spanish rice??, and it's a pretty good combo with the meal. If you must have one rice option, this one goes well with all the dishes served here.) -avacado (on the side) - very good, it adds a lot to a meal if you like avacado. -sour cream (on the side) - it's a pretty good pick.
And that's everything I've tried here! If you don't like the food, that's understandable. If you're a tourist, you may be used to more flavorful food. As a local restaurant, it's a solid choice compared to other restaurants around here. If you're used to more flavor and are willing to drive, go to Miami and try their food out.
Thank you for the consistently great food, and I hope your restaurant stays open for years...
Read moreI tried the place out a couple of weeks back and it was great! The service was great and the food was excellent. I talked highly of it to all of my friends and family. The second time I went the service wasn’t any good but the food was still great. I recently went this past week and that was the last I’m going to go for a while if I do go back. I walked in the door and I was yelled at by this lady from across the room “pick up “ ! I was like no , eating in. So she didn’t and doesn’t say how are you today or anything. I just felt like it was a Chinese fast food restaurant or something by the way she acted. She sat me and was my server as well. I knew what I wanted already and I told her my drink and she didn’t give me a chance to say anything else she just ran away. When she got back I told everything I wanted . But then she was running all over the place and grabs my drink goes to the bar outside to refill it and gave it to me and ran away again. The soda was watered down and had that fruity flavor. When she finally came back again I told her that it tastes bad and wasn’t like the original she gave me. She shrugs shoulders and says “ it the same thing out there as it is in here” no sorry about that or I’ll get you a better one. Tells me that she is just going to put it in a to go cup in which I never asked for. I was like damn I guess she wants me to leave because she gave me the crappy drink. I was going to stay and get a dessert because they are really good. When she brings me the drink in the to go cup she leaves the check and runs away. So I waited like ten or fifteen minutes and finally went up to the front desk to pay. The drink was gone already at this point. I gave the cash to a different waitress who finds and gives it to her. Then I waited another 5 to 10 minutes to get my change. I’ve never seen that Asian lady in there before but she killed it for me. I like to relax and enjoy my food and environment and the experience especially if I’m...
Read moreSo we were told this place was great, we gave it a shot and wow. It was awful. I really wanted to like this place. It’s cute and quaint. It’s by the water so of yay! The food was cold, dry and completely inedible. We ordered the queso which was actually really good but it was cold and they didn’t even give us chips with it. No big deal we just had to wait about 5 minutes until our waitress came out and we asked for some. Then our food came out. My sons tacos were so covered in grease that the taco shells fell apart and the grease tasted so awful he couldn’t eat them. My tacos were so dry and even trying to add sour cream did not help. The waitress never came to ask if everything was ok. I was a waitress for 10 years and I always made sure my customers were happy. If not, I corrected it. Finally when she came to bring the bill she saw we didn’t eat and just said have a good night. Didn’t even try to ask why we didn’t eat our food. I would completely understand if they were busy but there were only 4 other patrons at the time. I did not ask for a discount at all and paid full price but she could have at least asked what was wrong or at least gave us the queso for a discount since there weren’t even chips with it until we asked for them. I will go back in hopes it’s better because I support my local businesses but just beware. It seems they don’t care how they come across to...
