Absolutely love Gray's Ice Cream! I'd go as far as saying their the best place in RI! One of my new favorites is their Rum Raisin! There seasonal Pumpkin is also devine!
Update : May 5th, 2019 Okay, I stick by what I said. Grays has some of the beat Ice Cream in RI. Their flavors are always on point, they have some interesting ones that could be considered odd and they are fresh made. But, I have to express some disappointment for both myself and my mothers part. Every week we have taken a short drive to get a weekend ice cream at Grays now. The first couple of times were amazing! I tried some new flavors and got a large that was practically OVERFLOWING with ice cream! When you get a large, thats what you would want to expect! The last 3 times we went in, I and my mother ordered a large waffle cone. Each time (last 3 visits) they brought it out to us, I had to verbally question whether it was a large or not. It looked like a small, last time it looked like what would be a medium. No were near what we would normally get or have seen. I couldn't not request for them to add a little more to the top! When you pay as much as you do at Grays, you expect a GOOD amount of Ice Cream to be on that cone when you order a large!
Grays is open all seasons, however for our family its kind of an unwritten rule that we only get Ice Cream in Spring and Summer. I bring this up to explain when why my mother then stated, "We had this problem last year didn't we? The sizes just ALWAYS seemed off?". And she's correct. We had even approached them at one point to ask why they were always different. At the time the young lady had said, "Oh, well it depends on who's scoopong it.". I feel this is wrong. If you have a specific size you list, most all the sizes should be consistent. No matter who is scooping. Each employee should be trained to scoop what would be considered the correct amount. Maybe others would disagree with me. I do greatly enjoy their ice cream. There is something special about getting it fresh made and their flavors are good. I just question the sizing and feel they should be much more consistent, especially for the...
Read moreI love the ice cream here. I've been eating it since I was a kid growing up in the area. I drive down from Boston periodically and still enjoy it immensely... especially the black raspberry and blueberry flavors.
I was there on August 13th. i had raced to Westport to grab my friends and their kids to get ice cream...I drove in from Boston to deal with unhappy stuff in Middletown and this was going to be the highlight of my day.
so we arrived at 8:51 PM... and I guess you don't want to be at work. it's the summer. i get it. but it's a Tuesday. And you get out at 9... there's a lot left to the evening. and part of the summer for us, your guests, is eating Gray's ice cream in the evening.
however it doesn't mean you have to be rude to the customers. I'm pretty sure you refused to make a rootbeer float for the kid in front of me. you wordlessly got two samples for me which i was sure to have selected during my short wait so I'd be quick and efficient.
we all placed our orders {ended up being 3 total} and you handed them to us without saying a word, except how much i owed for the ice cream. I get it you want to go home. it's the summer, and that's probably your friends sitting in the car in the parking lot waiting for you, but it's still before 9 pm. you close at 9. and, yes, I made you search for the remaining quarter for my change because there was no way I was going to reward you in any way for your bad behavior. And I would have tipped if you had been pleasant and actually made any sort of effort to act like we weren't inconveniencing you.
contrast that to my recent visit at Benson's in West boxford where the person working was delightful and made an extra effort to get me my gallon of ice cream that wasn't out front and gave me generous samples of other flavors which I bought in pints. and they got a 20% tip because of it.
so instead of being in a rush to just to go sit in the backseat of your friend's car to stare at your phone at 9:04pm maybe put a little effort into your customer service.
(and we paid for a water which you...
Read moreThe boy who served us was rude. My wife did not have her mask so she stayed well behind the clearly marked white line as I ordered. (It was 8:55pm and not busy last night.) A male worker yelled out the window at her to say she can't be under the porch, so she took two steps back to comply so she was not under the porch as dictated. He further yelled at her again to say she can't be behind the rope (literally one more step back!) The sign said that's masks were required so she did not go near the window! The sign did not say not to cross the rope. (Not to mention, we're outside!) The girl who served us had no concern with her distance, as it should have been her to quietly and politely ask me as she was taking my order without issue), not the boy from literally the far window shouting at her repeatedly. Too bad, good ice cream, but not worth the embarrassment. A good Rhode Island staple, but we will not go back until the pandemic is over and the employees are...
