Mateo's Pizza — Restaurant in Town of Cairo

Just as a disclaimer, this was MY experience. I found this place on maps and decided to give it a try. I ordered sausage and peppers (picky eaters take a hike with your opinions) and the toppings were pretty massive. The sauce lacked so much flavor, as if they used too much water and the peppers were so full of life it made the pizza watery. I also ordered garlic knots and I’m not sure if they made garlic knots previously and just had them ready for someone to order but my garlic knots were so hard, I immediately thought they must’ve been the display garlic knots or something. I dipped my garlic knot in the “marinara sauce” and the sauce did not stick… it lightly coated my garlic knot but I ended up just taking a tough bite and sipped some of the sauce to accompany the hard garlic knot. I’m 6’2 and weigh 200+ lbs and I can eat a decent amount of pizza… I was only able to consume 2 slices and half of one garlic knot. The food made me feel heavy. After I got home and took a nap from overconsumption, I decided to give the pizza another try because I felt I might’ve been harsh on my judgement after all it’s difficult to f’up a pizza… I’d recommend bringing the pizza home if you order from here and heating up slices individually. This slice is far better than whatever I ate earlier. The garlic knots are just as hard, if not harder but they feel they have much better texture. Idk this was my experience, after leaving the place and trying a slice I felt robbed lol but the massive toppings I guess made me feel like I got my moneys worth but food shouldn’t make you feel this heavy.

Tried for the first time. The pizza was extremely flourey, and they used (I think) oregano quite heavily on the pizza. Sauce was not sweet like most pizzerias and almost invisible taste. It wasn't a bad pizza, but a different taste where the toppings were the dominant taste. Also got a chicken parmesan dinner. Came with salad and bread. The portions were impressive for a take out order. The only downside again, was the lack of sweetness in their sauce. Also got mozzarella sticks and empenadas. The girl behind the front counter was friendly and was checking orders three and four times to make sure nothing was missing. That's a quality you like to see. Implies the employees care about good service.

All in all, not bad. Would like it better if they actually added some sweetness to the sauce and cut down on the flour on the pizzas. ...

I find Mateo’s a little confusing as I’m sure most would. Looking around the kitchen the little Italian man most of us would expect to be behind the counter churning out pizzas is no where to be found but don’t let this dissuade you because these folks have pizzas figured out! I’ve eaten in house 3 X and got delivery tonight and every time the food was very good. Tonight what impressed me the most was that I was given the obligatory 45 minute delivery time and even though it was obvious that they were quite busy I actually got my order in just over 45 minutes . The only thing that I found remotely dissatisfying is that the order of wings was only 10 and that I received 3 drums ( the leg looking part for those that don’t know) and the rest were drumettes ( not my preference ) with that said they’ll definitely be getting more...
