I don't like writing bad reviews of a restaurant unless they really did something bad to me, and Sunshine's Coffee Shop absolutely does not fall into that category. They certainly did not do anything unforgivable to me. That being said, I still can't give them a great review because although they didn't do anything unforgivable, everything was certainly forgettable. And I see lots of folks giving this place a 5/5, so I feel like I need to say something.
The food was okay, nothing thrilling, but nothing bad either. The Denver Omlette (they call it a Western) I ordered was tasty, but wasn't a proper omlette, more like one of the stove top frittata's we all make at home and call an "omlette," but it was also overcooked and had significant browning, which lowered the quality noticeably. The toast was okay, and it came with apple jelly, something I've never had before, and I was happy I got to try it becauseit was very good. The hash browns were as delicious as any others I've ever had around town, the best part of the meal. The coffee, though, was mediocre at best. It was not very fresh, at least not as fresh as a place calling themselves a coffee shop should have their coffee. That or the water they used to make it is of very low quality, or both.
The service was also just okay. The clerk didn't notify me of any specials like she did other customers. She was not what I would call friendly, but far from rude as well. I was not made to feel welcome, nor unwelcome. I was just "there," which I noticed was the mood of the entire restaurant as I sat, waiting for my take out order to be finished. Everyone was just there, existing, slowly. The entire place, from the lady working the counter to the cook in the back to the other patrons, did everything, and I mean everything, every step taken, every bite chewed, every dish plated, and every word spoken, at a glacial pace. It was somewhat unsettling.
Also, the menu made no mention whatsoever of coffee. Which confuses me because the place calls itself a coffee shop! They also only had the one variety of coffee and maybe decaffeinated? Very peculiar, and on top of the coffee being mediocre at best to.
I will say one thing good though, everything was very cheap. I got a big box of food and a large coffee for under $14.00. So it's not like I overpaid for what I got. That and the apple jelly I mentioned earlier.
So I guess if you need something cheap, some hot food to fill you up, then stop on in. Just don't expect anything else. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to come here. In fact, I might go out of my way to not come here. Especially...
Read moreCame in for a late breakfast and was greeted by some of the most pleasant and wonderful humans. When you walk in, you truly do feel like family. This was evident not just in my case, but as others came into the coffee shop, they were greeted with the same warm welcome that I received, only it was unique to each person.
The shop itself isn't reminiscent of other small business coffee shops in cities. It is not pretentious...it feels like the kind of place where you could go every day. The prices are competitive to those of Dunkin and Starbucks, but instead of a chain, you get to support local business.
I ordered home fries and a sausage/egg/cheese sandwich on a croissant with a black coffee. That coffee, y'all. 🤤
The food was ready in about 10 minutes. The home fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned, and had just the right amount of onions. The sandwich was the true star, though. The texture was perfect and the balance of sweet and savory was well done.
The service and quality of this food does not deserve 5 stars. It deserves 10. I am from Alabama and have lived in CNY for 3 years now. I can't wait to bring my out of state friends and family to this incredible...
Read moreSunshine’s has the BEST breakfast sandwiches in CNY. My personal favorite is the Omelet Sandwich on a hard roll but the McDadey is pretty good too. And they have amazing hash browns, the diced potatoes kind with or without onions, which my daughter truly appreciates the second option! The hours are slightly limited, especially now with COVID and it’s not the fanciest joint in town but I live out of state and always stop to here at least once during every visit because the food is that good. With owners are the there everyday personally putting the work in and some of the kindest people I have ever met that go out of their way to get to know their customers, this is a must if ever...
